I have a full 1918 model with tail, while it is fun to pack in the comfort of my own home, laying it on a soft bed and admiring my packing job... it is an IMMENSE pain in the ass in any other situation.

I do believe the idea came from horse packs. A pack that instead of being one size can be adjusted as needed depending on the amount of equipment a soldier was carrying. A good concept on paper, but in practice, was a terrible idea. Not secure, not fast, a hassle over all. The Mussette bag was a far superior pack system than the 1928 haversack.

I wore one in the Inaugural parade in 1997. The Secret Service wouldn't let us switch shoulders or go to port arms. That 1928 pack SUUUUCKED!

That's what happens when planning like this happens from the top down. People who don't use it deciding what troops need. Still happens today.

So as a Marine Officer and a Civil War Historian I can tell you that dealing with equipment loads and Kits on paper the Government has always been useful but in reality the best thing to do is improving the gear to fit and accommodate the mission and need of the Soldier, Marine or even Sailor at times

I think the most hostile thing made for soldiers, the buttons the germans had on their sleves during 1864 war, They were made sharp so soldiers would not use the sleeves to whipe their noses

Manufacturer friendly. Give you the tools to make it for yourself instead of nothing at all

I was afraid he was going to rag on the canteen cup--one of greatest pieces of military equipment ever designed.😊

Pack tail was never meant to be used in battle. It eas meant for when you were marching to a new location, and taken off once you set up your new base of operations.

Looks kinda neat. I used one for recreational purposes/work it was pretty good but never would outside of that.

I love your content because WWII has a lot of history, and I love history

I've watched enough of these videos to be of the opinion that no US infantryman has ever had equipment intended to make their job easier.

I think I've seen a carbon copy of this but used by the Germans, does anyone know if there was some strange bag plagiarism related to the haversack??

I could see that diaper coming in handy combat.

These things absolutely suck during a ruck.

There should have been a modular bag to incorporate into the options.

The new packs the Marine Corps used has straps on the bottom of the main and assault packs for an iso mat or two man tent!
