are you not just clicking the erase option out of frame, having an inverted colour of the same photo on a lower layer and erasing the top layer?

the secret is they are drawing on a layer that is clipped by an inverted layer

for those who don't know it's not a brush you just put a layer on top of e every other layer then make the settings on it invert and put a random color on ur brush and color on the invert layet

It's a layer!

It could also be a brush, since there is an option in brush settings to invert the layer it's on(just sets blending modes), though I'm not quite sure about that since when I used it, it was "(name) - Invert"

Could also just be my memory playing with me.
