I love succulents just as much as the next plant obsessed person. They’re fascinating, colorful, easy to care for, & have reigned high on the popularity charts for many years now. Are you new to the wonderful world of succulent gardening? Have you ever wondered how much sun do succulents need?

Here’s the answer in short: it depends.

Not to be wishy-washy but let me 1st define what I mean by succulents in this post & video. All cacti are succulents but this isn’t about cacti. This is about those fleshy little beauties you see in dish gardens, little planters, living wreaths, & walls, as well as growing in the garden in some more temperate climates.

I wanted to do this post because I’ve grown these succulents both indoors and outdoors in 2 very different climates.

I currently live in Santa Rosa, North of San Francisco but grew up in San Diego County inland in the Dehesa Valley. Out there we had 115° summers with Santa Ana winds and 80° winters and no fog. I used to grow cacti on our shaded porch as a kid, my mom had the green thumb not me. I now have a big yard and lots of plants and have recently gotten into the world of succulents with a cousin, we frequent the nursery together and share our plants. Mine are mostly on a shaded porch and she unfortunately does not have much shade and even with plants that say they can take full sun she has issues so it has been a learning curve for her as to which ones can take the summer sun. We have been in the high 80s to high 90s this summer with only the occasional morning fog. Thank you for your videos I have been sharing them with her.

I live in LA along the SoCal coast and this video was more helpful than you'll ever know. It's so important to distinguish between full sun in the different regions. I have a string of pearls that almost didn't make it through the "May Gray" and "June Gloom" cloud cover, but is now very happy getting full sun most of the day, especially since it's still quite cool here. And I just bought a Frizzle Sizzle plant that also enjoys the full sun here!

Great video. I live in Nevada so we have similar climate. I struggle growing succulents well because the summer is too dry for them. But I keep trying. 😉 My cacti however loves the weather. I love your bishop’s cap with flowers. 🥰

Hi Nell,
happy new year, tons of health and happiness to you!
Actually even here in Berlin I need to protect my fleshy succulents from full sun during the summer months or else they burn.
During the winter months we have very low light, even on the sunniest days, and the days are very short. The winter months are always a hard time for my cacti and succulents. I give them additional light, but no artificial light compares to natural bright light.
So my plants and I are desperately waiting for spring and longer and brighter days.
Thank you for your videos and blogposts. Take care of yourself and see you soon in your next videos.
Best wishes from bleak Berlin to the Arizona desert.

This was very helpful, Nel! Thanks to your guidance, I've purchased a lot of plants for the first time recently. :) I got a beautiful ZZ plant based on one of your videos, and now have a lot of succulents. I placed a succulent planter on my porch for the first time this week and it's going very well! Please continue doing videos on succulent care and propagation! :)

A suggestion for a video is if you go to the grower who grows the horse Ian's I'm laughing right now because I use the microphone on my keyboard on my cell phone to type because my fingers don't type very well on this little itty bitty keyboard. It didn't know how to spell haworthia. Oops now it's spelled it the right way but I think it's funny it's spelled it like a horse! Any how do a video when you visit that grower

I don’t understand how you let your aloes grow for me personally every time i notice the bottom leaves always die off. :(

Hey! I was wondering if that's harmful for succulent babies to have some sun. Some of my babies have turnet pink on the tips and I immidiately changed their location - so may I ask if it's harmful? Have a lovely week!

The side of my porch is a resting place for all the succulents I've ever killed. 💀
I have managed to keep an aloe alive for a year though. I think I might name it Nell.
