Next time use Pirate Ship for expensive items. I shipped something very expensive (sold for $750) and breakable thru UPS but I used Pirate Ship. It arrived broken. Pirate Ship also handles your claim for you. I called them and started the claim. The next day I received my money thru paypal. The entire process was flawless and I was so pleased. Ever since then, I use pirate ship for all expensive items.

Anytime I contact ebay I use their instant chat because when done I get an email transcript! So it’s in writing should I need to go back.

Same thing happened to me years ago, but my sale was for $150, and the print, frame, and glass were all from the 20's or 30's. When the glass broke, it poked small holes all over the print. Learned a lesson through that and I only sell prints now without frames.

Bummer! Home Depot and U-Haul sell box kits for packing T.V.s that work great if you ever ship another one.

I mail paints/lithographs, /frames so it is worth investing in the right box to ship, yes, they cost over $35 but are worth it, also, I give more space to the frame corners by adding cuts of pool foam sticks. Never had a problem with the glass breaking/shattering. Good luck with your issue.

Sounds similar to an experience I had recently with a package that I shipped via UPS that the buyer claims arrived damaged. I was half thinking I was being scammed since I thought I packaged the item very well and the pictures didn't show too much. But anyway, I called Ebay first and was pretty much told the same thing, wait till time was up for them to step in and they would help out not to worry about anything. I called back like they said and the next rep told me complete opposite, that I needed to send the buyer a return label through Ebay and let them return the item. I was skeptical since I paid extra insurance with UPS and if UPS doesn't pick up the package then they wouldn't pay out the claim. So I filed the claim with UPS. But it was very stressful and I was very surprised that it seemed like all the Ebay reps were kind of clueless of what to do in that situation, and with as many packages that get shipped through UPS through their platform you would think they would be a little more knowledgeable about what to advise sellers to do when item arrives damaged through UPS. That being said I wish you luck and hope it all works out for you. And if I were you I would not refund the buyer until you get a result back from UPS and if the buyer doesn't return it, or allow UPS to pick it up, I would check with Ebay but I don't think they will require you to refund the buyer if they don't return it. Best of luck!

Whenever I have to ship something fragile, I wrap the heck out of it and NEVER WRITE FRAGILE on the package. I SWEAR when I used to mark packages fragile every item was broken. I truly think USPS plays football with items marked fragile. My carrier told me I had the right idea, even she agrees with me. You did an outstanding job packaging this picture and I'm so sorry you had to go through this and the inconsistencies on the part of eBay didn't make this any easier. Thank you for such great content. Have a happy prosperous holiday season!!

I went through hell with a buyer. The buyer refused to send the item back, but expected to be refunded for an item that they claimed was damaged, but they were unable to provide pictures proving damage. They also refused to communicate at all, but they fought eBay every step of the way and they also got their bank and credit card company involved. It took 2 months to get the situation resolved because the buyer wouldn’t stop fighting for nothing. It’s the craziest thing I’ve experienced on eBay other than the random person who harassed me for 6 months because they couldn’t figure out how to navigate back out of my eBay store, or the guy who bought something then claimed that he didn’t buy it and accused me of going into his account and buying it from myself.

This is extremely frustration, I feel your pain. Sometimes I feel like us as sellers are on an island with no help from anyone. I hope it all works out Drew.

Ups won't do anything because it wasn't packed in the proper box which has a weight and class stamp.

Stuff like this is why I am paranoid about selling higher priced items. I'll sell $20-$30 items all day long but I gotta ship something on Monday worth $200 on Monday and already the anxiety has kicked in :D

I have shipped hundreds of paintings, sheets of glass, cookie jars and other glass items. The only time anything has every broken was with UPS. The last broken painting had tread marks and they still wouldn't pay. Never again.

I had this exact thing happen several years ago. Ebay said its not their problem... UPS refused to cover the item even tho I purchased extra insurance. UPS refused to cover the item. I was out 500 dollars bc I refunded the buyer. PLUS I'm out the item. I am still very angry with UPS. They failed. Ups even packed it for me... so annoyed

Super weird the buyer won’t respond, if I wanted my $500 back because I got a damaged item I would send as many pictures as the seller needs!

For Future Drew: When I ship framed items with glass I make a lattice of the green painters tape on the glass (and alert the buyer). It doesn't protect the glass t from breakage BUT if the glass shatters and the bars of tape lattice are close enough the tape will hold the glass shards away from the artwork and protect it from cuts and abrasions. I know Lavender Clothesline takes the art out of frame to avoid the glass issue. Just ideas.

Local Pickup only on those big items, better yet leave it alone and scoop up the smalls to flip. Sorry for your headache.

If you accept the return and they don't ship the item back, is the return not cancelled in your favor?

I thought the buyer had to file the claim with UPS because they go to their house to look at how it was packed. If the buyer throws away anything then if appears they accept the sale and decided to put it in the trash.

I learned the same harsh, ugly lesson. I no longer ship large Glass frames . I’d rather pay a framing shop to dismantle the picture and either send without Glass or rolled up or flat laid and let buyer deal with reframing it.

I got nowhere with getting eBay’s help but wish you success.

eBay really should put requirements on buyers in these cases to assist in full with support. It’s crazy that eBay allows buyers to be silent and non-participatory….and I think some buyers take advantage to get an expensive item free.
