Lighting my hand on fire. #shorts #DrDawson #fire

How does Dr. Dawson light his hand on fire and not get burned? It's not magic—it's the amazing power of science! 🔥✨

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀: Dr. Dawson holds bubbles filled with methane gas. When these bubbles catch fire, the intense heat instantly creates a thin layer of steam around his hand. This is called the Leidenfrost Effect. The steam layer acts like a shield, protecting his skin from the flames! 🛡️💧

It should go without saying you 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗡𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥 light yourself on fire. Leave it to the professionals.

"Don't try this at home"
As if I just have a giant compressed canister of methane in my living room

My high school chemistry teacher did this demonstration ever year. There was a permanent scorch mark on the classroom ceiling.

this doesn’t actually demonstrate the leidenfrost effect. this is just the bubbles popping, gas igniting and the water staying behind on your hand after the bubbles pop. the liedenfrost effect needs a drastic temperature difference between mediums to cause a vapor barrier effect, like a scorching hot pan and droplets of water that skate around on vapor instead of boiling away only works when the pan is significantly above the boiling temp of water.

I used to burn my bubbles in the bubble bath as a teenager. I discovered how cool it looks when flame touched the bubbles by accident with my candles and became obsessed with burning bubbles ever since lol. You can literally draw in the bubbles because it just shaves the bubbles down so easily and precisely (with a lighter, not a candle).

Cool video! I do this in my job as a fire performer lol. Instead of methane, I use propane connected to a bubbler device. And it's true, it doesn't burn my hand for a certain amount of time because of water. I actually feel more comfortable lighting my knees. But don't worry, I'm insured, years of training, practice safety, and I literally don't do this at home, only outdoors. But please still don't try this at home 😅

Could we use another molecule instead of methane (CH4) like carbon dioxide (CO2) to do this experiment?

What if the methane bubble has more potential energy than it is, higher/longer than the leidenfrost effect. Voila, a burnt hand

Alright, make the bubbles but instead of methane it's 3:2 hydrogen and oxygen

I tested this a few years ago and it worked

Fascinating, and I will definitely be moisturizing my hands instead of trying this at home. PS Medicare for all 💁‍♀️ 🔥🏥
