Extremely underrated & disturbing film, definitely one of Cage’s best. Anyone that wants to call him a bad actor should watch it & many of his older past efforts, he gives a fantastic performance in this.

The constant disturbing and unsettling vibe this movie emits, is the reason why I love it so much. Its scary because the plot could be the reality of some ppl.

Joaquin Phoenix is outstanding in this film. He disappears into his characters, every time.

This movie fits on Nicholas Cage so well. No one else could do it with this intensity.

(SPOILERS) "Because he could. He did it because he could." That still gives me chills. The suggestion that sexual deviance was not his motive makes the spectre of Mr. Christian so much more horrifying. He simply ordered the torture and murder of a child for his own amusement - and, perhaps, as a show of power. One wonders why else the 81-year-old industrialist would have kept the film in his private safe, where its eventual discovery would have been inevitable.
I think what Mr. Christian "got off" on, more than anything else, was knowing he had the means to do something this horrifically evil and face no repercussions.

Great movie, what a cast, Cage, Gandolfini, Reedus. His wife, actress Keener. Not to mention the one and only Joaquin Phoenix. And Amy Horton as a girl's mother. Film is so emotional, I cry each time after watching...

With the prevalence of human trafficking and all of the evil in today’s high society, this movie is more relevant than ever.

This was the late director Joel Schumacher’s follow up to “Batman and Robin” (1997). Nicolas Cage was considered to play the Scarecrow, who was going to be the main villain in “Batman Triumphant” (or “Batman Unchained”), the cancelled sequel to “Batman and Robin”, which was originally intended to be released in the same year that this film “8MM” was released in 1999. Twenty years later, supporting actor Joaquin Phoenix would star as the lead in “Joker”.

Super glad I never saw the trailer and was dragged to the cinema by mates. Unknowingly I assumed it was a film about guns. Wow, what an impressive shock, pulled into an underworld of dark. Then the way the cinema hits you with silence, and booming soundtrack at the end.... it was the best suspense I’ve experienced in a film.

To me the movie is about forgotten victims… they call her “some girl”. But to her mom that wasn’t some girl . She was a human a person her daughter . And deserved justice . Victims are sometimes forgotten and de humanized, … but that was a person.
