February 9, 1966.
Douglas was in San Diego for a speaking engagement. He had already been on the highest court for 26 years and was nominated by Franklin D. Roosevelt. His term lasted almost 37 years and is the longest in the history of the Supreme Court. Harold Keen talked to him about his love of strenuous exercise, childhood polio, freedom of speech, individual liberties, and more.

What an extremely interesting interview and a fantastic piece of history. Channel 8 San Diego, thank you for saving this for posterity.

Honestly Douglas should've been around today rather than the previous century. He was so far ahead of his colleagues on the court in terms of personal and political philosophy that he came to find the Court boring and he didn't really get along with his fellow justices with the exception of Hugo Black (Both old FDR allies). He also formed a late stage friendship with Harry Blackmun based on their mutual love for the outdoors.

Greatest Justice in American history and the undisputed greatest judicial defender of freedom and rights....if we had a supreme court full of Justices like him, we'd get the 4th amendment back

This guy was almost president. FDR chose him in the VP shortlist. “My pick is Bill Douglas or Harry Truman”. Truman was selected by delegates because southerners opposed his civil rights support, but it would’ve been something if Bill got the spot.

In 1977/78, I was going to law school at USF (San Francisco) and my girlfriend worked at the Stanford Court (a 5-star hotel on Nob Hill). She told me that a "famous judge" had come to the hotel that day and described William O. Douglas as being in a wheelchair pushed by his wife. The details were that Douglas' wife was young and friggin' HOT. I therefore vote for Justice Douglas as the smartest judge in the Universe.
