I've read so many comments saying you're just hating with clickbait in spite of this video being filled with truth. People don't like the truth.

They nailed it with: *"This program was clearly designed to be as unattractive as possible."*
Videos about consumer rights are my favorite LTT videos, keep it up!

As a former Genius Bar member I can tell you that those 5 components available for the Self Repair Program are the same components that the Apple Store can replace, anything outside of that is a Whole Unit Replacement.

Conclusion: apples self service repair program is completely ridiculous.

Having done Apples self repair I know the pain.
After replacing the part you have to call Apple and get approval for your completed repair by letting them run system configuration, this removes the warning messages and artificial issues that arise after repair. This propriety software allows the parts to function correctly, In-turn making all 3rd party repair look bad and Apples offical repair be the only one that leaves you with a fully working phone.

The "This Week in Tech" crew tried the rental option for a battery. The major problem they encountered was the battery was shipped separately and arrived on the day they had to ship back the tools.

It’s a little worse again because after you carry out the repair yourself, you still have to call apple for them to pair the component to your device, and if this fails once then they tell you to go to the apple store anyways. Which completely defeats the whole process of shipping tools. It is clear that apple is building a case to make right to repair look pointless in the eyes of certain law makers

Thanks for pointing out the rental and buy differences. Now we know all those channels that did their videos spouted out the thousands it cost but only rented them cause they had the pelican cases.

Apple only did this as a “okay if we do it, will you shut up about it, ” move. Pretty much the bare minimum possible, to get government entities off their back and not brand them anti right-to-repair. There isn’t any reason then, to go this route compared to going to the Apple store and getting it fixed there. Yet by making the whole process as unappealing as possible, Apple can deflect criticisms, while at the same time increasing their margins.

Having formerly worked at an AASP, seeing everyone on YouTube explore these tools that I'd suffered with for several months of my life takes me back.
iPhone 11 and older, you literally toss it into a little apparatus with suction cups on either side and rip it apart with no heat. The iPhones before the 12 were so much easier to take apart.

The Heated Display Press is awful, and if a screen is too damaged it often is impossible to use the "correct" method to remove the panel. They have what are basically screen protectors with really strong adhesive to put over the cracked glass for the suction cup to grab onto, but the heat melts the adhesive on those, and you end up just pulling the cover off and the panel would just stay in place.

I could change the display on an iPhone 11 in as fast as like 5 minutes, iPhone 12 always took at least like 30-60, with most of it spent trying to get the display off.

Lol, the "Apple Silicon" label on the emergency sand bucket, as well as the problem/no problem labels, are a nice touch. Kudos to whoever put those on there.

The amount of times apple has just lied to me at the store saying “ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO REPLACE THAT PART YOUR GONNA HAVE TO BUY A NEW ONE” when the guy down the street does it in an hour is honestly insulting. So much e waste involved with what could of been just a chip replacement on the board.

I just consider the broken glass shredding up my finger a feature!

Apple: "Repair your device yourself!"
Also Apple: "But for 10% more!"

Why people STILL think this is okay is beyond me. It's just asinine that Apple continues to get away with this.

And he didn't even mention the fact that after the repair, you must call Apple, and make them verify that your genuine replace part actually is genuine through system configuration 🤯

I reckon it is highly likely that this system is designed to specifically undermine right to repair so that Apple can push against policies being implemented which would force them to make right to repair accessible

It's really just a way for them to say "We are doing everything we can to help people repair their own devices we don't need regulation" when ever Right to Repair comes up.

I have so much appreciation for a channel with the amount of influence that LTT has making videos pointing out messed up stuff like this. People with influence using influence for good are good people

Hey, thanks Apple. This offering provides such a great, real-world example of Malicious Compliance. The right to repair movement will hopefully be able to benefit from using this demonstration to educate the general consumers.

We need a sweep counter for every time Linus brushes his hair out of his face.
