The Johanniter Castle of Monolithos

Показать описание
Monolithos is a small town in the municipality of Atavyros in the west of the Greek island and municipality of Rhodes. The name in Greek means something like "lonely rock". The place is known especially for its Johanniter fortress.
The Byzantines built about 1.5 km southwest of today's place a festival that was extended in 1467 by the Knights of St. John and restored by Pierre d'Aubusson from 1480 to 1489. Today, the castle, which incidentally was never taken, serves as a popular photo opportunity and vantage point. Within the castle walls is a chapel of St. Pantaleon.
