I disagree with the idea that their is no reward during play. When you play a scoring card right after you have taken dominance of a region that someone else has been dominating for most of the game that is always a huge boon to power. It just sounds like in all three games that didn't really happen for you so I understand why you might feel frustrated

Great review, guys. My son (US) and I (USSR) just played our first game last night, and had the same experience as you: the US player got quite frustrated with his early war cards. I fact, our game ended before the mid war. Those of us old enough to recall the Cold War probably appreciate the theme and tension a little more than younger players. Thanks for posting a good overview that I can use to show others about the game.

This is by far my favourite board game, it's absolutely fantastic.

As a TS-player: One thing that confused me about the review was when they talked about accidentaly triggering nuclear war (aka DEFCON suicide). They mentioned the "poke the opponent in the chest"-card (Kitchen debates), however that card got nothing to do with DEFCON. The only way to lose bt playing Kitchen debates is if the USSR plays it when the US is at 18 VP and has control over more battleground countries than the opponent, thus triggering the event which gives the US 2 VP to reach 20 (no matter what the DEFCON is at).

I'm not sure how a Ruskie would feel, but I feel a bit flattered to have a Brit represent the US with such pride.  King George and Washington are both rolling in their graves.

Kristof, I haven't played this game yet but it sounds like its adherence to theme is part of that "no reward" feeling that you mentioned. To me it seems like you described exactly what it must have been like for a leader of the USA or the USSR during the Cold War:  desperately trying not to lose everything while actual tangible victories were few and far between and the next crisis always around the corner. Sounds perfect actually! (although maybe not fun)

Excellent review! In 5 min you were able to explain the core of the game in a way that other reviewers didn't manage in 25 min!

Great review once again guys. Really enjoyed it. If you could manage it I would love to see you guys tackle "A Few Acres of Snow". It would be great to see that one.

I have to say, I realy enjoy your reviews. They are  funny (in a good way) and still informative. I have two questions. If this is a niche game, how is it possible, that it is on the 1st place on boardgamegeek? There is another very similar game - 1989. Could review this one? Compare these two games? Thank you.

Terrible title. This is definitely not a "review", this is a "first impressions". TD
