It's a fillet rather than flaunching. Flaunching is around a chimney pot.

What's the point of indenting those lines onto the mortar after smoothing it out? Does it help with cracks or something ?

I'm a chippie and i don't get how quality brickies like you can do this yet I have to try and build roofs on top of extensions that are 90mm out of square and 120mm off level?
