I’ve spent $100’s of dollars on just about every single method out there. They all are hard work lol. I’ve been restoring a 50 year old, 30x50 deck by myself and I’ll say:

The diamabrush or flapper disk on a grinder works wonders at removing paint, BUT it leaves pretty deep marks to sand out. It is the most effective tool tho for removing the paint.

I’ve tried electric hand planer (burns paint if it’s too thick), paint stripper (you’ll be scraping all day) angle grinder, rented floor sander, belt sander, orbital..

The best, most cost effective way I’ve found to remove the paint & restore the wood for stain; is either start with the diamabrush (leaves heavy gouges) or a flapper disk on the angle grinder (leaves indentations) and THEN once all the paint is off, rent a big floor sander but only once all the paint is taken off. This will let you breeze over the rest & save you pads. I was able to get it all sanded smooth in just a weekend.

No matter what route you go, keep in mind you ain’t gettin out of working hard lol all these videos make it look so easy but in reality.. elbow grease is the only way

If I could do it over again I’d probably just unscrew & flip the damn boards haha 😅

Angle Glinder it is to remove the old paint, the floor sander is to give a smooth finish to the wood, it removes all the imperfections of the wood such as wood with splinters.

I’ve done both and I feel the floor sander comes out cleaner.
And I restore old cabins with a grinder, 100’s of hr on one.
Floor sander comes out better finish

60 grit with an orbital sander works well.

*shows random orbital as bad way instead of drum sander which would work way better . I do like the grinder tho use it all the time for thick paint on siding

Im pretty sure a sandblaster or wet sandblaster gets the job done with no sweat.

Use an angle grinder... then use a sander to properly finish the job after you just hacked at it like an amateur and left all kinds of grooves and marks in the timber. Don't let this guy anywhere near a deck or a power tool
