Caterpillar Cocoon Time Lapse

I have recently been corrected on this. It is not a Wooly Bear but rather a Spotted Tussock Moth - Lophocampa maculata. Thanks vireogilvus.

The kids (Aspen and Cedar) had found this caterpillar and we saw it start on its cocoon. I figured it would be a good chance to try out the time lapse on my new Nikon D800 for the first time. The first video was too short so it stopped long before I checked. I therefore started a new one. This cut merges the two and slows them down a bit over the two parts previously posted separately. The variation in lighting is because it was under natural light over several hours.

Excellent video, but not a wooly bear. That's a Spotted Tussock Moth - Lophocampa maculata. Just thought you might like to know, especially if you're using this in a teaching context.

Thanks. I found a cocoon like this, and wondered how they made it.

Is it making it's cacoon out of it's own hair?

? do they pluck their little hairs off and make a cocoon out of it?

I think I have a yellow woolly bear that is cocooning. It did one dropped one last frass that was red/orange? (I fed it dandelion leaves and a few native tree leaves, with lettuce here and there) and then this yellow liquid kinda seeped out. Was it trying to purge before pupating? It's cocoon is orange now (because the "yellow" woolly bear became a very dark orange) and has some of the liquid on it. Should I be concerned?

So I was moving my wholly to a new home and I couldn't find him. When I did find him and picked him up to transport him I realized he had just started a very thin layer of his cocoon, and it got tore a Will he be ok or did I mess up his whole process? Does anyone know? I've googled and googled can't find a definitive answer. I really hope he will be

I’m raising a wooly bear caterpillar, and I have had him for around two days. I woke up this morning to find his head off of his body? Any clue why this would happen? Thanks

What a great thing to be able to view that. And what impressive structural engineering! I brought home a wooly bear yesterday evening. What a pretty creature. This morning I woke up, and he had made a cocoon in a paper cup. I guess he's staying with us for the winter. Any advise or suggestions... it is Oct 6th, 2014, and I want to make sure he or she is well cared for. (Temperatures... wake up time?)??

WAIT, SO THAT'S THE COCOON OF IT?

FUCK, I thought it's like a web where they die? We have TONS of theme each top corners of the house, and they're making me cringe.

Do they need to be hanging on the cocoons Nike monarchs do

dude WTF? How come you didn't film it when it was emerging as a moth (or butterfly but I think it's a moth?) LOL Awesome video, btw! I love how it produces their own resources to make their own cocoons. adorable, and they are soft too 😄

cool video.. but a time lapse that says "hours later" half way thru kinda misses the point.
