Italia 90: The Most CONFUSING World Cup Ever

The 1990 World Cup is probably one of the strangest World Cups I've looked into. One of the worst on the pitch and seemingly one of the best culturally.

Today, we look into it.

00:00 - Introduction
02:15 - A shocking Start
05:14 - Knockouts (barely)
07:40 - A catalyst of change

Fun fact: the public in Napoli applauded Maradona for his efforts against Italy, and while this nowadays is seen as a sign of respect and sportsmandhip (see Juve fans against Ronaldo in Champions League), the Italian FA decided to never host another Italy match in Napoli again. To this day, that was the last game that Italy played in the stadium that now bares the name "Diego Armando Maradona"

As a Costa Rican, this world cup has been one of the most beloved ones in our history.

Italy 90 was our first world cup ever and we managed to beat Scotland and Sweden. And we managed to barely lose against Brazil. It was our first world cup, and we managed to go to the round of 16.

The players that played for CR during this world cup are seen as super heroes till this day. And the coach (Bora Milutinovic) is seen as a god.

As a German this worldcup was really important to us as we lost the two finals prior in 1982 and 1986 this World Cup especially after the Wall went down was a important step for our mindset

Fun fact when Argentina beat Italy, much more people entered the stadium after the 80th minute when the doors were opened to let the fans out of the stadium to watch Italy lose just to see Maradona play for free without tickets ( my mum and dad were there)

The 2014 Cup ended up being quite traumatic to me (I'm Brazilian lol), but until the semifinals that was the coolest Cup I'd watched. Costa Rica leading a group that had Italy, England and Uruguay; Spain, the title holders, getting a 5x1 thrashing in their first match and then being eliminated by Chile; a shower of goals in the group stage; legends like Messi, Suarez, Neymar, C. Ronaldo, Müller etc all at their peak...

Still, 2002 Korea/Japan remains my personal favourite <3

As a Cameroonian this was my favourite World Cup 🇨🇲🇨🇲🇨🇲. We did great and nearly made a Semi-Final, the only problem was that it was before I was born 🤣.

Although I wasn't born, this World Cup holds a special place in Irish people's memory as it was our first time we ever qualified and we managed to reach the quarter finals - although we never won a game in normal time haha, there's still a lot of moments that are etched into legend - we've only been in 2 world cups since

As an Irishman I think we’ve blanked out the fact it was such a boring group and that we actually never won a game in proper time (I was actually shocked to hear this😮)
That WC is burned into our brains as epic days!!

A shame people frowned upon Argentina so much. Only team to win 2 penalty shoot-outs in the same world cup thanks to the heroics of a *substitute* goalkeeper. Even though his career was mediocre before and after this WC Goycochea is still perceived as a legend in Argentina

5 goals in 7 matches. Argentina went into the final with that stat. But while that sounds awful, we must remember that the team had also lost almost half of their team due to Suspension/Injuries. Add to the fact that despite the dominance of West Germany(23 shots, 16 on target), the deciding goal of the match was a penalty, which was in line with all the reckless tackling Argentina was partaking in until that point. Out of all the fouls though, it was a questionable one that got them the penalty.
Also, Matthäus had tripped Jose Calderon after losing the ball in the penalty area. The Referee for this game, Edgardo Codesal, ignored the appeal from the midfielder, refusing to take action.
Luck wasn't on Maradona's side this time.

I will always love it. My first World Cup to watch when I was 8 years old. And my nation won. Also iconic players like Higuita, Roger Milla or Valderrama and legendary games like Germany - Netherlands with Rijkaard spitting on Völler.

And two iconic goalkeepers, Goycochea and Higuita

Being Irish, Italia '90 is looked back at fondly here. How couldn't it be? Us in a World Cup quarter-final?! Crazy for a country of barely three million people with no national league to speak of and the competing GAA sports of hurling and Gaelic football to contend with.

Really wished Maradona won himself another world cup in that final. What absolute legend to carry his nation the way he did

2010 World Cup is the most iconic, the music, the vuvuzelas, the weather, the ball (but I’m also saying that bc of nostalgia— the first one I truly paid attention to)

While it was notable for dull play, a combination of England's run to the semis, Gazza's tears and Pavarotti singing Nessum Dorma made it a big deal in England. In the '80s the game itself was often overshadowed by hooliganism, but its increased popularity set the tone for the launch of the megabucks of the Premier League that was launched in 1992.
