The Dawn of a New Era: Readout of the 19th Party Congress

The 19th Party Congress appears to be a total victory for Xi Jinping and the dawning of a "New Era." Hosted by CSIS's Freeman Chair in China Studies and Senior Adviser, Christopher K. Johnson, the panelists will discuss whether reality matches appearances, as well as break down key aspects of the 19th Party Congress, including: personnel, the Party as an institution, and the likely trajectory of economic and foreign policy. Following this, the panelists will assess the implications for the United States. Mr. Johnson will moderate the discussion and pose questions to each speaker and then invite members of the audience to ask questions to the panelists.

There s an old saying in diplomacy. Capability does not equal intent. It certainly applies to America. The same applies to PRC.

China' s strategy is pretty clear: project power through non-military means; deter external military intervention by raising the cost for any would be 'aggressors' such that they would not bother even if they could win. That is a very tricky strategy for America to counter as it does not allow America to play to its strengths.
