I think that the Harmony OS's future is also tied strongly to Google's attitudes towards the Android platform. There are already concerns regarding Google's prioritization over the development of closed-source apps on Android over their open-source counterparts. What happened to Huawei is only going to add to the uncertainty.

Huawei is going ahead with HarmonyOS regardless of what happens to Android and it will be a success simply because Huawei has a majority market share in China.
When you combine this with their 1+8+N ecosystem, then one can see that Huawei can connect thousands of devices using one operating system.
If the trade war continues, China can simply require all phones in China use HarmonyOS.
