I always enjoy your reactions. I didn't recognize you at first. I thought for a minute that someone else had taken over your channel. LOL I've never seen you without a hat or wearing anything but black or gray.

Your puzzling expressions over this song is amusing! Let me provide the story behind this. Trident studios were newly opened, one sound engineer wanted to test the capacity of the studio. He selected two songs to test the studio, I Can Hear Music and Goin' Back. The big test with I can hear music was to replicate the wall of sound technique made famous by Phil Spector in the 60's. Phil Spector was the producer of a lot of 60's pop in America. He was more famous then the artists that recorded with him. He created the wall off sound. The wall of sound is basically loads of instruments being played together, to create a big sound. For example, instead of using one bass player you would use 4 at the same time.
This wall of sound worked very well on the low quality radios of the day in the 60's. Phil Spector invented the sound and his most popular group was The Ronettes, they originally sang this song.
(Check out The Ronettes Be My Baby, their most popular hit with the wall of sound). Read up about Phil Spector he was quite the character, and he is currently in jail.

A sound engineer from the newly created Trident studios wanted to recreate this sound, but he could not find a singer to sing these songs. These songs were done by women originally. He wanted a very innocent type of voice for these songs, this was in 1972. Queen had recorded 5 demo songs at the De Lane Lea studio. The De Lane Lea studio was also new, and they wanted a loud rock band to test their equipment. Brian knew someone who worked at the studio and he got the gig for Queen. As part of the deal Queen were allowed to record 5 songs. In those days it cost a lot of money to record a demo. Queen took their demos all around London. They handed in a demo at Trident Studios. This engineer, that wanted to test Trident studios, somehow heard Queen's demos. He thought Freddie had the perfect innocent type of voice he was looking for.
He got hold of Freddie and he was called in to record Goin' Back (actually a pretty good Carol King song). (A section from Goin' Back is also used on the last recording Freddie ever did). But they were not completely happy with the instrumental sound, so Freddie quickly arranged for Roger and Brian to come and work on this song, I Can Hear Music.

These two songs were cover songs. In the meantime Trident Studios, which was run by the Sheffield brothers had also signed a production deal with Queen. They would soon start recording their first album. (Which the Sheffield Brothers would sell and shop around to record labels). Queen made an agreement between themselves that they would never record cover songs. Therefore they did not want to release these songs as Queen songs, and the sound was also obviously different from their own sound. They did not want to confuse the public, so Freddie picked the name Larry Lurex. This was a joking play at Garry Glitter. Gary Glitter was extremely popular at the time. I Can Hear Music did actually chart in the US. These 45's singles are highly collectible nowadays. The British DJ's were not impressed with the name Larry Lurex, they thought it was a bad sarcastic joke against poor Garry Glitter. Of course the irony these days is that Gary Glitter's reputation can not sink any lower.

I'm so glad you found this song! No matter what name he sang under, Freddie was the best!!

Thank you for this reaction. I've heard this song many times but I never thought it was Queen. :)
I'm gonna make a request now: 'Too Much Love Will Kill You'.
Brian wrote it in 1988 when he was going through a difficult emotional time in his life. It's a absolutely heartbreaking song.
There are two versions, one sang by Freddie / Queen (1988 or 1989) and one by Brian (1992); two different characters singing the same song!
I recommend that you try to do a 2 in 1 combo reaction. (official videos)
Just put it on your list please.

EMI wanted Freddie to do a single when Queen was first signed on with the Sheffield Brothers. I have no idea why they wanted him to do that under a fictitious name. The single didn’t do much.
That’s a new look. I’ve never seen you without your baseball cap!!

I was playing "Larry Lurex" to my 89 year old Mum last week - she's a huge Freddie fan like me - and she couldn't guess it was him. Fail!! Larry Lurex was Freddie winding up Gary Glitter - horrible man - so maybe Freddie guessed what he was really up to! Lurex is a material with a metallic look like glitter so there's the wind up by Freddie! You've got to love him❤️🐾

Like your look, your hair has grown in lockdown😊. Going Back is lovely, very young, fresh Freddie. It’s Going Back that you can hear at the end of Mother Love, makes me feel so sad 😥. ❤️Freddie❤️

It is a true story Haps3speak.. everytime I hear you I hear music 😃 Completely resonate with your review. This song also suggested 1960's meets Christmas .. but that's probably just me.

I did hear many years ago and I cannot remember the source of the info that the tracks under the name of Larry lurex, the song especially 'going back' was released by queen to hide their identity from trident record label and to see if they had any success when they were being screwed finacially by them. Cannot say for sure if that was true but just thought I would share that.

I Can Hear Music was written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector for American girl group the Ronettes in 1966, in 1969 Beach Boys did a cover to this song and reached 24 of top 100 and in 1973 Queen as Larry Lurex did this cover and reached 115 of top 100 in US! But I like this one and Going Back as Larry Lurex!!!

It was common in the 70s if an artist produced s song that went down a different route to their usual style, it was released using a pseodnym. Here we have 1 of 2 cover songs as opposed to Queen doing original songs. This is a Beach Boys song and Going Back was made famous by Dusty Sprinfield

Hap - from what I remember they were helping a new studio test their equipment setting up the sound systems - in exchange they were given some studio time for themselves - but had to obviously use a different name - enter Freddie's sense of humor... it wasn't really for them to release, but a demo for the studio itself... edit - the song itself was a 60's song cover, I believe.

This was a spoof on Gary Glitter, Freddie, Brian, and Roger were recording their first album, they were borrowed as musicians to test NEW Studio recording equipment .
