The magic erase doesn't work that well unless you have a fairly undefined background. What I have done, and get some good and some bad results for, is erase the background, or use magic grab to separate the subject from the background, then swap in a new background. On the new background I have used magic erase to clone out a stray leaf, or bird, or swimmers in the sea to make the background more suitable for my subject. I have also used the magic expand and then touched that expansion up by using magic erase. Magic expand can be a bit poor quality, and often won't match the amount of blur existing in a background (depth of field) so I then use the blur tool to help it match better.

Go back and read the prompt again about the black curly hair. You wrote, "replace the "had", not replace the hat. That might have had something to do with your results.
