HBM2* Stands for High-Bandwidth Memory, revision 2. It's very expensive, very low-level, low energy, ultra-fast random-access memory primarily designed for GPUs. It significantly reduced the amount of GPU power that had to be dedicated to video memory versus the 5300M and 5500M when used in the 5600M, and made the 5600M able to fit more GPU compute units into the same power envelope. Between the memory bandwidth increase provided by the HBM2 and the additional compute units of the 5600M, the 5600M was up to 75% faster than the 5500M 8GB model, which was very upsetting to me when it came out three months after I bought the 5500M 8 GB model.

The 5600M was also a power-efficiency champ at idle, relatively speaking, and did not suffer from the hardware flaw with GDDR6 models (5300M, 5500M) where driving an external display caused the video memory to clock up and use more power than needed. This issue was a big part of what made me ditch my 5500M-equipped MacBook Pro 16 after just 10 months, as I was constantly using it plugged into an external display.

If you found this comment helpful, Gary, why not give it a pin? ;)

The newer M1 is performing better because of the notch 🤔

Hold your horses though rendering on the i9 8 cores 32GB a 4k movie took 7minutes, on the M1 with 16GB 12mins, almost double, food for thoughts. Ram seems to make a huge difference still.

I have the 16” i9 and I’ve legit never heard it make a single noise ever. Not once. 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

I’ve got the M1 MacBook Air - my first Mac, and I am absolutely blown away by what they were able to pull off. Most I do is editing photos in Lightroom and Photoshop and it handles everything ridiculously well compared to every Windows machine I have ever used.

It's not like I'm buying this mac but the new chassis aesthetic is a step backwards. The old 16 tapered design looks so good.

When I compare the two - I don't like the fact the older laptop has a notch that goes all the way across the screen ;)

Am I the only one that wouldn't mind both the function keys and touch bar?

Great video. I have a 16" Intel MacBook Pro and between the web cam and the fan noise it drives me crazy.

Ihave intel i9 model, I think it is gorgeous for me. Company of heroes 2 plays natively like a dream, no hiccups, machine is Eastlake a lightning to an ordinary user. Fans make a little noise but they also keep MB relatively warm.

Its a unique review. Good thinking. No other reviews talked about the boot camp stuff. I couldn't even find any review talking about SSD bandwidth. Yours is the first and only review to do so.

as a lover of portability, I would like to see a stress test between the 14 and the 16

Purchased an i9 16gb ram 2016 MacBook Pro in excellent condition for around $780 on Amazon. 1tb ssd. If I wanted similar storage/ram on a new MacBook I would’ve paid a fortune. Very grateful for my laptop. Price is an important factor in usefulness. 3-4 2019s for the same price as a similarly specced m2? Praise God for helping me find the deal! The speakers are incredible and it’s the last MacBook to run windows. The i9 itself bought alone would cost probably at least half of that $780. Might be the best buy on the market for many. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.

I would like to see a review between the base model 14” and the 16” base model . Great great videos. Love your content and the “user friendly “ explanations 😂

Yess all it’s true but i9 2019 cost 1 k usd and m1 16 inch cost over 3 k, so if u are not a pro user, what isn’t best in that case?

I just got 13 2020 i7 32 gigs ram and 512 ssd. Tried even gaming on it. On windows 10 it pulls Dishonored both parts at 70-80 fps with 900p medium. Amazing rig. So good my wife took it from me. So here I am, looking for 16 2019 with 5500m and 64 ram.

I like the Macbook 16in Intel one since it has bootcamp for my gaming, i'm wondering if you can do a comparison: Intel 16in Bootcamp windows Vs M1 Pro/Max Parallel window. It would be greatly appreciated by many people how also want to use Macbook for gaming from time to time.

So bummed because I just bought the intel version at the beginning of last year expecting to hold onto it for at least 5 years and I still have a ways to go to pay it off 😑

Fan noise. Ever since I got an iMac Pro years ago, I can’t stand the fan noise from the intel 16” MBP. Can’t wait for a silent MBP again!
