I think it’s near impossible to clarify exactly where things went wrong or how to fix them when you’re sitting in the mess you made. Whether it’s time or distance, sometimes the further you get away the clearer it all becomes to piece things together and make your comeback.

Riley says: I wanted a song that somewhat captures the spiritual change I was going through. It was an indescribable shift or presence that suddenly made my life’s purpose feel more visible or tangible to me. I’ve always felt a bit uneasy in music about how self-focused it has to be at times and this new life that we’d brought into the world (by ‘we’ I mean my extraordinary wife Alex) had created such an incredible energy shift that made me feel more connected to what it meant to be a human in this world.

This song is about being with someone who puts on such a compelling act in a relationship that you believe the love is actually real. And even upon recognizing that it was an act, there's still a part of you that doesn't want it to end.

‘Klonopin’ is a quick fix as needed anxiety medication that can be highly addictive and cause dependency. The issue is it is just a temporary fix so it’s tough to rely on something like that. I’m doing much better with it but writing a song like this was extremely therapeutic and difficult at the same time. I want people to feel like they’re not alone in this and I think this song screams that message.

For me, this song represents my inner country boy longing to escape the city for something green, to return to where everything began. Both Portair and I come from rural upbringings (though from literal opposite sides of the earth) and something we’ve spoken about a lot while writing together is the ever-present wish to return to nature someday.

It’s not a perfect remedy and it’s one hell of a bad habit to break, but on those days when you just don’t have the fight in you anymore it can be the thing to get us by.
