this has nothing really to do with IB HL, but i'm using this to help one of my students for a maths interview soon, I was wondering whether in the second question the ODE we solve doesn't give you the y^2 = 4a^2-4ax solution?
My thought is that I think we were a little bit not careful with the details, since technically we want a family of curves perpendicular to all the curves of the form y^2 = 4b^2+4bx, the differential equation you derived holds at the point of intersection of both curves which depends on the parameter b, so what you found there is the the curve perpendicular to y^2 = 4b^2+4bx for one fixed value of b and not for all of them. Is my thinking right or did I miss something maybe ?

Perhaps also to find the general family, we would need to solve for b in in terms of x and y. I think this is why they didn't ask the students to derive it, because then you get a nasty expression to integrate
