Shipping A Car Across Country Is A Bloody Nightmare!

Here’s one issue with buying a car within a large country like the United States: transportation. I have learnt the hard way so you don’t have to! This is the awful story of how transportation companies and brokers try to run for the hills when they make a mistake. Yes, I’ve had enough and so you guys get the full story! Beware!

In this video then, I’ll show you how I transported my car and what I will never do again. My Porsche 928 was delivered in an awful state and even to this day, the transportation company itself hasn’t paid a dime. I’ll name him so you can avoid him. Not a professional outfit at all! Also, the broker took some persuasion before I got some compensation and my Prussian Blue paint on my car repaired.

An awful story honestly and I could have done without it! Learn from my mistakes!

Why not follow me on Instagram too? I am a CAR guy first and I get around so take a look at the reels and pictures that I take because you might like them! Also you get news on my own Porsche, my MG and other life events there before YouTube! Look for jayreadyoutube on Insta now!

Jay, sorry to see how this has played out thus far!
I think you might need to go to a lawyer and have a letter drafted to send. Likely the company won’t want to go through a lawsuit, and the threatening letter might get the correct response.
Can’t wait to see this move on to the next chapter.

Sorry to hear about the damage and the trouble with the shipping company, hopefully you get it sorted. Absolutely loving the t-shirt and the recent addition of the opening humour, I've laughed out loud every time!! Keep it up!

As others have said, if you paid by credit card, dispute it. That gets their attention. If you didn't, it's time to lawyer up. For the future, you can actually contact the transport companies directly rather than go through a broker. I did that for my 928 and used Intercity Lines. It cost slightly more, and I had to wait 6 weeks for them to have a delivery route to my area. But the difference was night and day from a smaller company. The truck was specifically outfitted for carrying cars, and the driver went over every inch of it with me on delivery, showing what was on the original Bill of Lading as imperfections and showing nothing added. By contrast, I went through a broker for my 914, and it showed up in a small trailer that did not look like a dedicated car trailer. There was no Bill of Lading(!) but fortunately my car was handled with respect and made it OK ( I had a video of it from before it was loaded so I knew what shape it was in). It was only slightly less expensive as the 928 shipping, and I got the car in a few days, but if I do it again I will contact my preferred company directly and wait.

That situation is truly devastating, and I wish I had an answer for you. Best of luck with them. Keep us posted!

Jay:
I've also had a similar experience with covered transport going through a broker. I had a Ferarri replica actually dismantled and parts taken, same story about attempt to recover damages, the out come is that the damage is less than the legal costs of pursuing a legal solution, so the shipper just doesn't answer until you spend more money than what you will recover (which you will not do) so you end up eating the damages and having learn't a lesson about shipping cars. I've learn't that when I now ship cars, I deal with a mom/pop local shipper directly, one with good repatriation, cost might be a little higher but I've found it is worth the extra for peace of mind. We in New England are lucky too have several local high quality transporters in our back yard. Sorry to hear about your bad experience, but I think in the end you would be better off to just move on and register a YELP message about the broker and transport company to warn others of what could be in store for them in the event of

Jay, Thanks again for another good video.. Maybe the content isn't as positive as you would like but look at the bigger picture, it's a blessing in disguise.. Life teaches us many things and this bump in the road is another lesson. I know things will work out and in the meantime, there are parallel projects that this beautiful car needs. You are a problem solver, and a great teacher to us Porche guys and I'd say keep your bloody spirits up! BTW, my GTS Targa, 7 s-peed manual arrives this week.. Don't say anything to Murray., might turn his stomach!! funnny!

You sure you don't want your own insurance company involved? Part of the benefit of insurance is they represent you. It's their job to act on your behalf, find the other parties insurance and between them decide who is at fault and who will pay.

That's so annoying. I hope you can get it sorted ASAP. Looking forward to the fixing up videos.

What a shame for a proper original Porsche in a beautiful colour. I’d be gutted TBH, and the nightmare of getting it sorted. Good luck and hope it somehow gets resolved.

I have an idea Jay, post the number for the guy avoiding your calls, and we as a Porsche community can continue to call and leave "many" messages telling him to do the right thing, and what the next version of T-shirt might say....

Consult with your insurance company. They may cover the damages and it’s attorneys may go after the car carrier.

I transported my 928 from Virginia to North Dakota. (I live in Texas, my good friend is helping get it fixed up). I used Montway. With the exception of the driver being nearly impossible to understand, the car arrived in its own single car container roughly on time with no (discernible) damage. I am really sorry this happened to you. I'm hoping that either your shipping cost was refunded to the amount needed to offset the repairs to the front, at least! Montway won't want to foot the bill, but they should just do it to avoid bad publicity, and THEY should be the ones pursuing legal action from the actuall shipper.

I’ve shipped many cars to South Africa, Nigeria and Jamaica and never had anything like this happen to any vehicles.
However, if it did, we had all sorts of insurances in place.
These people need to come clean and fix that. If not. Name and shame. Not just Montway, the lot!
Get you and Nick together and teach them a lesson. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

‘Fast and reliable’, my a**
Unbelievable, what a scam. It is pretty clear who caused the damage. So man up and pay for it.
I feel with you, Jay.

So unfortunate. It's sad people can't make things right anymore. Damage to cars is part of doing business in the shipping industry. It's inevitable.

I rent out homes. I knew I would run into issues and problem tenants before I got into it. I deal with it and move on.

Good luck! I hope this video "encourages" him to make it right. Send him the link to it.

What a massive bummer being treated like this. Every time I have a car shipped I’m worried about this exact situation where there’s damage and no one wants to just provide the customer service they were hired for. I’m not even talking about going above and beyond, just fixing the issue their driver inflicted. Hopefully they pay for it and if they don’t it’s just money to fix. Don’t let it take the jam out your doughnut!

Contact your credit card company, put the charge to the transport company in dispute, let them handle it. Good luck, nice car btw

Reverse the charge with your credit card company. They’ll be calling you back in a heart beat.
