Website Page Scroll Progress Bar

This very quick video introduces a very basic website feature that renders a scroll position progress bar at the top or bottom of a page. As a user scrolls through content the progress bar displays the page position.

Defining up front what’s required to consume your content provides potential readers with a finite framework from which to make a necessary time commitment. The idea is that the more we know about something – referred to as operational transparency - the more likely we’ll commit the appropriate time, or set a specific goal. If we know where the finish line sits, we’ll more likely commit to the process. A progress bar holds the attention of a user and enhances the delivery of value.

The value or usefulness of the progress bar is often debated, but we’ve split-tested the same page with and without a progress bar on longer-form content and the experience with a progress bar consistently returns better conversions.
