Why People Collect Soda Can Pop Tabs

The Ronald McDonald House does have an on-going Pop Tab Collection program, which helps fund some of the organization's expenses and services it provides. The idea is for organizations, clubs and/or groups to collect those tabs that you pull to open a soda can. Although the whole aluminum can is valuable, the pop tabs are easier to collect and easier to transport.

we called them lucky tabs. when you got lucky you would give the tab to your partner of the night, they could then put it on a necklace or bracelet or simply just collect them.

I always collect these, and I still do collect them just because I wanted to, but I didn’t know that I could actually ship them in and get some cash from them so this is quite useful thanks for the exclamation!!

I've used these for a few emergencies myself! They make good fish hooks, If your zipper breaks or your bra strap.. You'll be glad you have these! I've used them to hang photo frames. 😎

Pull tabs lasted into the 80's, at least in Texas. We didn't get stay tabs until the 80's. All beer and soda had pull tabs.

Also, people collect them for goods. There are people who make jewelry, purses, even clothing out of them. That is where the money market is. They will pay more than a recycle center when purchasing tabs for making goods.

I collect them cos they can make cool chains ;w; I have a jewelry box full of them they are useful for makeing accessories like trouser chains and chokers and the also make cool earing tbh-

The tabs aren't lined with plastic. In recent years, all soda cans are inner lined with plastic & this makes the tab itself a "higher grade" & easier to recycle

Liked and subscribed! Excellent information! I had no idea the tabs were a higher quality aluminum than the can. My daughter started collecting the tabs as a hobby and it looked fun, so I got into it, so now our aluminum tab collection has grown to a few hundred tabs in the very short time we've been collecting!

Surprised no one has come up with an embossed can that is paint free to help recycling and the environment as well as reduced costs. Peace

i dont know what made me start collecting them but i did and i went to a recycling center and they had a huge bin full of cans and i wanted to go though all of the cans and take their tabs. I didnt though

I have a crap ton of them, if I like someone I will give it to them, more as a friendship thing but it’s a way I tell people I trust them. I wear them myself as well :)

these are urban legends, people assume they're for cancer, but the hospital doesn't recycle. it's because you can't do anything about cancer so this project to collect is just busy work to give people, mostly children, hope; it's like praying but more proactive in the sense you feel like you're doing something

People still collect them 4 years later. :) Reasons may be somewhat different but it still happens. Mostly craft uses and some tabs are colored now. Bubly water has tabs in several different colors with words on them. Recycling prices have improved too. About every couple months I bring my cans in for a per pound price and walk away with at least $70 in cash. That is minus the tabs as I sell those to crafters. :) - Heidi
