We Know How to Measure Crime; How Do We Measure Safety?

California 100 and the Possibility Lab are developing alternative metrics that integrate lived expertise into the design and evaluation of public safety policymaking. Together with community partners, we have brought together hundreds of residents representing many of the constituencies that have been most heavily impacted by violence: Black, Latinx, and Asian-American residents, immigrants and refugees, current and formerly incarcerated adults and youth, and others who have been deeply affected by issues of safety, crime, and the criminal justice system.
