Creeks are an amazing place to start, Usually lots of different species, Largemouth, smallmouth, all types of sunfish, catfish, carp ETC. And best part you dont need lots of equipment, Just a simple spinning rod set up and some basic baits.

I grew up in Iowa and farm ponds are where I first learned to bass fish. Good fishing and very little fishing pressure.

Thank you, Randy. Enjoying this new series. I started fishing back in the 60s, but never been very good at it.

As someone that almost exclusively fishes easy access public water ( by way of our city park along the Medina river here in TX) I do pretty good but not fishing the normal stuff beginners will gravitate to like a TX rig or maybe a small crankbait.

If you wade a creek or river pay attention to the bottom make up. A soft bottom can get you in trouble safety wise. Farm ponds are great but leave no trash behind, not if you want to be welcome back.

You're not wrong about farm ponds. I've fished for more than 30 yrs and my two biggest large mouth bass came from them.

Tips when asking permission... offer to lend a hand (if you'reyoung and able you might land a job this way too), or a case of beer (if you're old enough of course)

Lastly, the quickest ways to LOSE permission once you've gotten it, leaving a mess ( ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS leave it cleaner than when you came, this should go for any body of water you fish) second way to lose permission is bringing friends. always communicate your fishing plans and ask if you can bring a friend. And Cleary communicate to them that bringing them does not mean they themselves have permission. I lost permission because of this once. Smh.

There's a fishing golden rule #14, leave the private ponds nicer than how you found them, and close any gates behind you. Too hard to find a spot to turn around and lose access by a bad decision.

Big Tip, If you do get permission to fish or hunt on somebody's farm/land do not leave a trace of trash or anything behind cause it's a sure way to loose that privilege.
