In the 90s it was a common thing to have like a "mom" plush that's big and the back either velcros or unzips and had a bunch of babies in it of that plush though sometimes the babies had variations in colors and patterns. They did it with cats and dogs and bears all of which I had as a child so the dinosaur is really not that weird to me.
