I loved Maven because I think as a villain he was really complex. I don’t know if you’re a writer (only just found your channel today), but I always try to read from a writer’s (as I love writing) perspective, and while Maven is in no way likable and even if he tried, he couldn’t be foreseeably redeemed, I still sympathized with his upbringing and perpetual confusion with what is real and what isn’t. I had compassion in spite of still hating him, which I think is a really hard thing to write into a villain. I definitely agree that the series as a whole could have a been a full book length less, but for me, Maven is actually the most redeeming thing about the series itself honestly. :)

I don't usually comment on videos like this but I kind of felt the need to.

Honestly, Maven grew to be one of my favourite characters by the time the series ended. He wasn't just straight up a younger brother 'mad because his brother is the hot one'. He is just a broken young boy who can no longer be fixed. This is because of his mother who has been inside his head and controlling his thoughts/actions since he was born. She removed all the love he had for his own father and brother. And yet somehow, even after she's gone, her words still linger in his head. Cal even tried to find a newblood who could help fix him but even if he did, I feel that Maven couldn't fully recover. His wounds were too deep.

In my opinion, Cal wouldn't have made a good king. I mean cmon, he constantly looks to his grandmother & Julian to make the tough decisions for him. What's gonna happen when he doesn't have the luxury of their company anymore?

Many villains are just there so there’s a bad guy to fight with. But Maven was realistic. He didn’t even knew what he’s motivations were and many people don’t know either. Also the way he’s mind worked and processed things were so complex and different that it was interesting for me. He wasn’t just an outright villain trying rule over the world, he was made like that by his mother which is both intriguing and sad.

I gave 3 stars to War Storm too and that was definitely a generous rating. The only reason why I finished the series was because I wanted to know how it ended lmao and it was a let down. But really though, I was kinda hoping each book was going to be better than the previous one but they were all just meh after the first one.
