Float the sand in a hot forge, add anything combustible, get a basic start to a fluidized bed gasifier.

Ideas: Motorised boat. Pump gas and light it on fire. Slowly add water to see if effect still works. Fill it with water instead of sand and see reduction of boyancy of airated water
