What should I practice for my road test?
Steering: Steer smoothly whether you are driving straight ahead, turning or backing up.

Acceleration: Accelerate smoothly and moderately. Don't race the engine or cause it to stall.

Braking: Bring the vehicle to a stop gently. Start braking well before your stopping position to avoid abrupt stops. Make sure you stop your vehicle in the proper position of the lane.

Clutch/Gears: Always be sure your vehicle is in the correct gear. With either an automatic or a manual transmission, shift into the proper gear at the right time without "grinding" the gears.

Speed: Obey the posted speed limit, of course, but also adjust your speed properly due to weather, road, visibility and traffic conditions.

Following distance: Keep an adequate space "cushion" between your vehicle and those you are following. Use the "two second rule" described in the Driver's Manual. Be sure to increase your following distance in poor weather or visibility.

Traffic signs, signals and markings: Know the meanings of signs, signals and pavement markings, and obey them consistently.

Stopping position: If a stop is required, stop your vehicle before it reaches an intersecting street. If stop lines or crosswalks are present, stop before crossing them. If your view is blocked after stopping behind the crosswalk, move up until you can clearly see your way, then stop again if necessary.

Lane selection and position: Keep your vehicle in the proper traffic lane, especially when preparing to make turns. Don't allow room for another vehicle to pass you on the side that you are turning toward.

Communication: Let other drivers and pedestrians know which way you want to go. Use your directional signals or horn consistently and at the proper times.

Observation: Look for and identify potential problems or hazards in the traffic around you - not just straight ahead, but behind you and on either side. Check your mirrors frequently, but be sure to look over your shoulder behind you when changing lanes or backing up.

Anticipate and react: Anticipate possible driving errors by others and be ready to react safely to make up for their mistakes.

Just passed my NYC road test!
Guys, it’s so much easier than you think. I was 100% positive I failed, did the worst parallel parking of my life, jacked up my three point turn, was jittery behind the wheel. But I passed!
The instructors in NY tend to be really dry, very strict, and don’t appreciate talk. I just said yes sir and no sir the whole time and he seemed to be happy with that.
I was super nervous and you will be too. Just rest assured that even if you feel like you’re having the worst in car performance of your life, that you’ll be just fine.

just got my license on my first try today and this was one of the videos I've been binge watching. I was soooo nervous before but what i will say to you all is that the exam is not as hard as it seems in your head. You're only being asked to do things you already know how to do. Trust in your self, your abilities and leave the rest to God. You got this!

I just passed my test. I was so nervous but once you get into the car your nerves will die down. Just make sure to follow the instructions and do what you know how to do. You guys will do great!

I just passed my road test today 06/09 in Queens. I was nervous but when I was at the site, I felt okay as I saw how quick it was and the area wasn’t busy. I read the scoring sheet so I knew the things that has big points to be more careful at that. I did as I was taught in driving school. Main pointers:

1. Stop 3 seconds at STOP signs (no rolling stops). For STOP sign only, you need 2 stops - one at the line and one after that to look at the intersection. For STOP ALL WAY, only one is necessary.

2. Look right and left on your shoulder every time you are crossing an intersection or just turning right and left.

3. For Parallel Parking, make sure to signal FIRST, put transmission to Reverse, maneuver the wheel and look at your blind spot (turn your neck) not just in the mirror before moving.

4. Do not show hesitation on intersections
specially if its your right of way (it shows you are not confident in driving.)
This is where I got 10 points off as I slowed down on an intersection when turning left and there were no cars around nor stop signs, only an old lady that I thought was about to cross.

5. Drive within 21-23 mph. The speed limit in NY is 25.
The whole time I was driving around these numbers but when I made the mistake in #4, the examiner talked and explained what I did and what should I do to correct it. As I was thinking about what he was saying, I didn’t know I was going 35 mph. He reminded me to not go fast. I just said ‘Sorry I was thinking about what you were saying’. I honestly thought I was going to get points from that.

I wasn’t asked to do the 3 pt turn, only parallel parking. Most of the time, my examiner was just looking at his lap, I don’t know how he saw me stop or turn. The exam was just around 7 minutes. On the way back, somebody opened their door that was parked and hit our moving car. So our examiner was quick to leave and ran to the other car to check the damage. Didn’t affect my score. Went home and thought I failed, but thankfully, I only got 20 points less due to intersection-based decisions.

Just passed my road test and im commenting this on all the videos I watched to help me pass. Thank you so much for your help. Getting a license especially in New York (where im from) is a huge deal when you live far from public transportation. So thank you for relieving the stress I had for years about it. Message to the test takers, Do not focus on the instructor or whatever they’re doing when you’re taking your test. Just listen to their directions, pay attention and focus on the road. The test is really short and simple, there is no tricks or gimmicks. Good luck!

This video really helped, I took mine last week and passed. I lost 10 points for failing to signal properly during my 3 point turns and parallel parking. It's easy to pass and equally easy to fail if you ignore the minor mistakes and take things for granted.
