Mind-blowing Quantum Physics Quotes from Quantum Physicists | Doc Physics

Certainly the most controversial physics result of all time, quantum physics shakes our understanding of reality to its core. Here's what famous physicists have to say on the topic.

You should watch this BEFORE you study quantum, just to know what you're up against. If you're confused or troubled, you've got great company.

Your daughter is so adorable that I forgot what half the quotes even meant.

Aaarggghh! Too late! I did not watch this BEFORE studying quantum. I'm already sucked in by it. In fact, today I actually USED quantum mechanics in a situation in which it is not physically relevant, just to make sense of something. Admittedly, I had to set hbar to zero, but I could still use its framework, writing bra's and kets to 'conceptually cut open' a mathematical function. Quantum is in my veins.

It is all about what you are used to. If you are born in a largely classical world, you grow up with all sorts of classical notions that to you are self-evident. E.g.: every object is somewhere. You probably learned that one when lying in a cradle wearing a diaper. It's wrong, but you are used to it. It worked for you, until you are confronted by quantum. Then the rational thing to do is to admit that classical notions have only approximate validity, and embrace the quantum. But being rational is sooo hard, when years of infant (and later) conditioning are in the way.

The advice I'd like to give to anyone who approaches the quantum is: do as I did, shred your human nature and start over, replacing your basic notions by quantum mechanics. Stop expecting things to make sense in terms of what you grew up to be familiar with. See the weirdness of the world, especially the classical one. Write bra's and kets. Worship the formalism, feeling its utter coldness, and worship it nevertheless. Inhuman you say? It is. Embrace it. Manage your expectations. You expect an electron spin to be either up or down? Stop expecting that! A superposition is just as possible. Kill that classical infant inside you. Strangle it, with its weird notions of locality and observations that don't affect the observed. They are bad dreams from which you are awakening.

When you emerge from the bloody slaughter of your former, classical self, and the bright cold light of quantum has filled your mind, you can start your new life, like me, no longer human, with a clearer view of the world.

After this rather gothic tirade, here is the question. If Nature actually is quantum mechanical, and the quantum clashes with your deepest intuitions, would you want to study it, and moreover, accept it wherever it leads you?

PS:
I absolutely love the children doing these quotes!

PPS:
I heartily disagree with some of the quotes. In partucular: Bohr at 2:17, d'Espagnat at 2:34, and Rees at 2:50. Feynman, of course, is never wrong :-)

How about this one? This is my favorite:

Seriously...beautiful the way you put this video with your family. Teaching your youngest one to speak. The middle one is very funny (particularly at 2:28 ) and the Oldest one seems to be in those self-conscious years.

Doc, your videos are awesome and have been really helpful on my way to study medicine. I would be great if you did an explanation video of spin some time, the concept is kinda distant to me

+Victor Dolman All three of those quotes are in coherence with the double slit experiment or shall I say "the double slit experiment is in coherence with all 3 quotes"?
