“POV: You’re Just Told You’re Losing Your Leg” #how

Motorcycles are significantly more dangerous than cars for several key reasons. First, their small size makes them much harder for other drivers to see, especially in blind spots or during lane changes. This visibility issue increases the risk of collisions, even when the motorcyclist is riding responsibly.

Secondly, motorcycles lack the protective features built into cars—most notably, crumple zones and reinforced frames. In a car crash, these structural elements absorb much of the impact, protecting the passengers inside. On a motorcycle, there’s virtually no buffer. The rider’s body takes the full force of any impact, making injuries far more severe.

Additionally, motorcyclists are exposed to the elements and more vulnerable in the event of a slide or ejection from the vehicle. Even with a helmet and protective gear, the risk of serious injury remains much higher compared to being in a car. That’s why safety awareness, defensive driving, and proper training are especially critical for anyone on two wheels.

My dentist got t-boned while on his motorcycle, despite having done everything correctly. He survived, but is wheelchair bound and will be like this for the rest of his life. He still does amazing work, though, and is very kind-hearted

Had about 30 people in a soybean field looking for my friend’s foot after his accident. Nope.

Doctors commonly refer to them as Donor Cycles for a reason!

I rode bikes exclusively from the age of 17 to 28. From 400's, 600's to 1000cc. I had a few falls. Some minor accidents. Some really close calls. Riding a bike is exhilarating. I miss it sometimes, but I will tell you it is a young mans game. I am now 39 years old. I do not have the same level of physical alertness required to pull it off anymore. I didn't even at the time I retired from it. The last bike I owned i bought when I was 33. I had it for a month, and someone pulled in front of me, taking me out. I was fine, thank god, but the bike was written off. It was then I decided my bike days were really done.

One of my family friends lost their lower leg in a motorcycle accident, a car practically ran him over, its been devastating to him. He was fully dressed in protective gear, was lucky to live through all of that and the many terrible hospital stays he delt with afterwards. Please, PLEASE, stay safe out there folks, if you're in a car please be aware of motorcyclists. My heart goes out to anyone who has suffered an accident like this. Thank you for raising awareness for this, more folks need to be made aware of the risks of the road, especially when it comes to motorcycles ❤

I HATED riding a bike. I was extremely aware of how vulnerable I was to pasing cars and BUSES in the street. While my friend was enjoying the breeze I was hiper ventilating with "dumb ways to die" song playing on a loop in my head

Why is that? In trauma we tell you like this. EVERY SINGLE car/bike/motercycle/whatever is actually 3 collisions.

Collision 1- The initial/first impact is the hardest. So car vs car both the cars outer shell is what absorbes most the impact force. If you are on a bike/motorcycle then your body absorbed the initial hit.

Collision 2- Your body against the inside of the car. On a bike yeah it's still your body vs pavement/other car.

Collision 3- your internal organs against your bone skeleton. Your insides including brain slam into the bones in your body.

So it's pretty simple. On a bike/motorcycle you yourself take all 3 of those hits. And the worst hit is your body taking initial impact.

Legend has it he lost his leg, got a prosthetic when he got back home, and STILL got back on the bike

Honestly, the most common cause of motorbike accidents in my area are the bikers not following the laws related to their vehicles and making incredibly dangerous decisions. I honestly lose synpathy for those folks. I wish i still had it, but after seeing what consequences those bikers actions have for their family, if they hit someone else then that person's family too, i cant. People split lanes at high speed, ride their bikes in the cyclist lane (which is for non-motorized bikes not motorbikes), run through red lights, and just generally drive at 15-20 miles above the speed limit. My first experience with a motorbike accident was when i was maybe 8 or 9 years old, me and my parents were driving on the highway. We were approaching an overpass when i saw a bike come flying off to our right from up on the overpass. The bike landed in the highway and luckily it wasnt rush hour so there werent many cars on our stretch, and everyone was able to avoid the bike. I didnt see the biker land at all, he was thrown farther than the bike. I had remembered seeing the news story about it later that night, where they said the biker was thrown all the way to the right side/shoulder of the highway, and they died on impact. A few years later when i was older, i asked my grandpa about it, because he worked in the local police force around the time thay accident happened. I asked him what happened to the biker, was it actually instant lights out? He said they were fairly sure he died on impact, but unfortunately, immediately after he hit the road, a car wasnt able to evade and ran him right over. If the fall itself didnt kill him, the car did. But the coroner didnt see any signs of hin surviving the inital impact with the ground.

I work in surgery. In the last 3 weeks I have personally been involved in surgeries involving 5 or 6 different motorcycle accidents. One person has died from head trauma, one has at this point been in 3 procedures for broken bones, 1 had a fasciotomy preceding an amputation, others for internal injuries. The one who died was a teenager. We had 3 level 1 traumas involving motorcycles in 1 freaking day.

Same goes with bicycles too. It's not the speed you're riding at, its the driver who most likely never pays attention on the road. Safety first!

It’s because people drive suvs that don’t leave any survivors when their negligence leads to a crash.

Cars are deadly. Their safety score should be evaluated by what they crash into too, instead of just the people inside. There is currently an arms race of heavier and heavier cars. It is ruining society

As a fairly new car driver motorbikes might be worse than overconfident cyclists on the main road. The cyclists might overtake the same cars at red lights far too many times for my sanity until it is a sick and a bit dangerous not-game. You see them in the mirror as long as you don't sleep.
The motorcyclists are too fast when overtaking cars in slow traffic. They really shouldn't do that because it's near-impossible to see them in the mirror. On my way from-to work the straight lane basically changes lanes so often only residents know the way) and motorcyclists illegally (!) overtaking on both sides makes it worse.

My mom's first day as an EMT started off being sent on a fetch quest to retrieve a motorcyclist's head, after it rolled down a hill.

I've seen more accidents of motorcycles than cars where I'm from. Mainly because alot of the guys riding them are dumb and unlicensed but that doesn't stop their need for speed.

we have a ton of crashes where i live, most are very close to my house because theres a straight road nearby and people love to go way over the speed limit there.. last year we had two that stood out: a man hit a deer while riding his bike and died, and a young boy drove into a pothole, flew off the bike and laid there for hours until he died - i believe he got a brain bleed. wasn't found until two days later (nobody knew where he was riding and both he and the bike were in a very thick bush). scary stuff.
