When I lived in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, 400 km south of the Arctic Circle, our children would catch tadpoles in the pond across the street. I'm not sure where they went when they hibernated, but frogs in the NWT, sleep for at least 9 months. The few snakes up there, curl up underground in a big clumo of snakes and sleep 46 weeks a year.

Skin: Toads have warty, drier skin, while frogs have silky skin.
Legs: Toads have stumpy legs, whereas frogs have longer legs.
Behavior: Frogs need to be close to water, while toads can be further away.
Hopping: Frogs tend to hop higher than toads.

There used to be tons of frogs where I live at night all you could here where toads and in the spring the ponds were filled with tadpoles. afew years ago they all disappeared, the only ones i see are the big old ones but no young ones or tadpoles. I find this to be alarming since amphibians are very sensitive to chemicals and environmental changes.
