I (33M) recently found myself entangled in a tumultuous family drama that has left me questioning the very fabric of trust and loyalty in my family. My dad whom I have considered a mentor and business partner for over a decade dropped a bombshell that shattered my world.

To provide some context, my Dad (65M) is a heavy diesel mechanic and has run a small workshop his whole life. I have always been interested in his work since I was a kid and would always help him out on the weekends. I went to college to get my qualifications in Automobile Engineering so I could get a degree and officially help my dad out. Since I was 23, I have worked with my Dad as a mechanic and slowly taken over his workshop.

This happened to my sister. My mother wanted me to take over her business. I had zero interest in the business. My sister was the one who loved the work. I told my mother I didn't want her business and she be better off giving it to my sister. My mother didn't listen and still went ahead and gave it over to me! I never forgot the look off hurt on my sister face. My mother reasoning was I was oldest. I just offered it to my sister. She refused and went off and did her own and started her own business. She's very successful. My mother business closed down and hasn't recovered since covid. I'm proud of my little sister ❤

Kinda ironic that Jerry was an accountant yet couldn't even account for himself.

There are a few stories similar to this on Reddit, because sadly crap like this happens often. My best friend went through somethingsimilar. She worked for her family's company and helped build the business after college. She pretty much did everything the last couple years. But, when her dad's golden child son graduated 7 years later and worked for the company for a year, her dad decided he was going to retire and give the business to his son. Why you might ask? Because he felt a woman could run a company. What stopped this was that her mom reminded dad that while she stopped working 10 years prior, she owned 70% of the business and so she vetoed his decision immediately. So, mom gave her 70% share to her daughter, leaving dad's 30% for the son. Thankfully, her brother really wasn't a brat and they still run the company together 20 years after the mess, with my friend being CEO and her brother being CFO (Cheif Financial Officer), and ownership is now 60/40 as her brother bought some of her shares. Their parents, unfortunately, ended up divorced

Over 30 years of favoritism and op was expecting something different

Her dad is a narcissist. Expecting a narcissist to behave normal is like expecting a spider to stop eating flies.

This almost exact story has been told at least three times, the first one I remember being a plumbing business, the second being an unnamed type of business. Always entertaining no matter the details.

Was Jerry a toddler who couldn't survive without ice cream? His father could taken Jerr9 for ice cream after the awards ceremony.

I'm sure Jerry will be there when Dad is old and sick.

Auto mehnanics are a hornrable profession that not many people are really good at.
The argument that the son jerry pulled over a pratice tells that the family only cares about the golden boy.

And for every life milestone, Dad gets a pint of ice cream.

So instead of an announcement of engagement, a pint of mint chip
Day of the wedding, no invitation but a pint of chocolate chip cookie dough
Child is born, a pint of butter brickle

No details, just a pint of ice cream, just to let dad know that something is happening but he is not important enough to get the info

I bet OP dad is regretting getting his business to golden child and lost his other son

I'm starting to think that stories like this with incredible detail on certain incidents, and particular attention to phrasing are simply exercises in creative writing. This one takes its cue from one written a couple of years ago about a dad giving his plumbing business to his golden child.

If I was op I would walk away from his dad and work on building a life of his own and start a family of his own

It's not a family business without stakes. He turned OP into an employee. An employee is responsible for their best interest regardless of whether that is with their current employer.

I hope Op has an ironclad will so daddydearest & brotherpoo won’t get vent of any inheritance

Oh well every action has a consequence. They made their beds so now they have to sleep in them.

Jerry is going to use this as an example to his kids, which is why you do not become a mechanic. He will make it out like he was helping Grandpa with a struggling company. So he is a hero in his kids eye's. Jerry will treat the dad horribly when he has to care of him

He could have very very easily sued him for 50 percent of the business sounds like it would have been easy to prove that he was responsible for even more than 50% of the success

OP should have flipped the script, been just as callous with his dad. "You can continue to try and make your failing business work. But I will stay with my business. That's my final decision."
