The beating was brutal. It showed that up until that point, he was honestly going to probably kill him if he didn’t agree to do what he was set out to do. But him saying after 500 years he’d be okay to have just his dad it brought the tiny bit of humanity he gained from being a real/good father to him on earth as he grew up. It made this false protagonist turned HEAVY antagonist regain some favor from the viewer. Excellent writing.
