I will try this but bake the meatballs prior so i can drain the grease from them and use a baking pan instead of the foil bowls. Thank you for the idea/recipe. Anchorage, Alaska

Foil pie pans would be so much easier, with very little added expense.

I used your recipe almost to the letter, being that I used different seasonings. I did it 2 ways. Way #1 was exactly as you called for. The issue I ran into was that the grease from the meatballs was far too overpowering for the dish. I used 90/10 grass fed beef, because I was afraid of this, hoping the 90/10 beef would not be fatty enough to have this problem. Way #2 was done almost exactly as called for, except that I cooked the meatballs halfway before putting them in the mashed potato crust, allowing them to cook fully during the baking process. This turned out far better, as it had far less standing grease that had to be slopped down, but enough that it gave flavor to the mashed potatoes. Just as a note, I used pureed garlic in the meat.

Yesterday I put this recipe in my Favorites, I cooked it today and just finished this wonderful meal. My wife said, "Outstanding!" She isn't known to use such words. Try it, you will like it.

Can't you just use a round glass casserole dish. Why all the extra work with the foil. Only to then have to transfer the finished dish into another dish.

It can be whatever someone prefers and has on hand. If you have round small tin pans of your own, or foil or a casserole dish. Thanks for the different way to do meatballs and mashed potatoes. Hi from Chicago, illinois.

A few thoughts. All the grease from the meatballs went into the mashed potatoes. Why not do it in a 9x13 inch pan to save work and foil? Do they use anything besides mozzarella cheese, has anyone ever seen them put a heart by anything? It's kind of strange.
