Really helpful video that had me re-evaluating how I try to learn my armies the entire time I was watching

Yay. I finally got around to watching this and not falling asleep.

I loved this discussion. The 2 of you covered this topic really well. Its is quite interesting how different people learn differently.

I think when it come to learning 40k, I think the important thing to understand is that the rules are complex, very complex. It would be quite rare that someone would remember and retain it all. So don't stress try and read as much as you can and get out and play. Imo I think the best way to learn the rules and your army is to get out and roll dice.

I also have coloured sticky tabs on my codecii in case I need it.

Also, I think what is important is to trust yourself. I come across a lot of players (even in the tournament scene) who are always question thier knowledge of their army's rule set. I used to do it myself, think I've forgotten a particular stat but when I've checked i found I was right in the 1st place. So trust yourself (especially of you have been playing for a long time).

Great video Tanya. Can't wait to see the next one.

Commenting as I listen because otherwise, I'll forget my points. The color-coding is a great idea. I already would write stuff down on paper (note cards are a better idea) and put tabs in codices. But the color coding would help so much more.

I often forget Battlescribe has rules. I pretty much use it just to keep track of what models I have. The automatic point updates are handy too.

I prefer edited and shorter batreps. A little bit of moving models and rolling dice, but not everything. I also like the personalities, commentary, and reactions. Not all videos click with me. Even by the same creators. Play On Tabletop is my favorite. Short, edited and commentated by a non-player.

Great walk through on this topic. Look forward to the next episodes. I would say that it is important to be able to pull somethings from Full Bat Reps that are educational. These are akin to watching Tape/Film in Competitive Sports. And there are some of us that lean from mimicry. It shows you how things get to where they need to be. Love the content, Renlor.

The most important thing ive found to help learn rules is to get an idea, usually a really wonky one, and hunt the rules for things that support or deny that idea.
More often than not when i do that i come across rules i completely glossed over before, either not doing right or wasnt doing at all and make a big difference. Not always positive either.
Battlescribe is a listbuilding tool, not a rules learning tool. Its actually pretty notorious for having a misprint on its rules, i usually hold anything battlescribe says with a grain of salt.

Battlescribe is better than the other apps.

Yea learning the rules was tricky at first but the best way for me to learn and the way I advocate most players to learn is read your rules, play games and ask questions

Interesting bit regarding how we each learn / process / retain new information via the primary use of 1 of our senses (i.e auditory, visual, by doing/tactile, etc.) 🤠👍

Do you have any tips on how you take notes to learn the rules and codex? I feel like I have a learning block when it comes to this game I feel silly trying to play against someone being so lost. Thanks so much.

Just saw you on the Play on Apocalypse game and came to check out your channel. This is definitely going to be what i listen to for painting for the next bit.

Just wanted to share a story I had with one of my D&D players who was struggling to learn their character. I sat down and made them flash cards with each ability they had, colour coded in to the type of action they were. That way they could essentially do one of each colour on a turn. It really worked well.

I play necrons and I keep forgetting to do my f***ing command protocols and then remember on like turn 3 and I’m just like well to late now

Saw your post on Facebook last night. Said I would sub, so here I am. :-)

1. I use Battlescribe. It's much easier these days to list build. Prior to 8th it was easy enough to use the codex and pen/paper to work out a list. With 8th sticking the points all at the back and frequent updates, I find it hard to keep up to date. Battlescribe makes it easier. Still read the codex frequently though sometimes it gives me fresh ideas for list building or options. I would recommend Battlescribe to anyone just for the ease. I do agree with the idea of having a paper copy rather than just reading on a phone though. It's easier to show an opponent if they have a question.

2. Battle reports... love them up to a point. As a big fan, although very casual, of 40K I enjoy watching a well put together battle report. They have to be short, no more than two hours, or I start to get bored. I don't enjoy watching sports but I can watch a decent 40K game. It's nice when they play a narrative and talk through the choices and the hows/whys. I find it helpful to learning as well as getting some immersion in the setting.

3. As for learning the rules faster... I'd say focus on one small army build. Learn it and how works. Then when comfortable add something new or swap something out. Learn in steps and soon you pick it up. The only thing I have trouble with is remembering stratagems - there are just too many, even just going by my own codex. They just don't sit in my head easily.

Thanks for the topic.

Great video Tanya! I had thought kinesthetic learning was more about "doing" the thing rather than doing some kind of physical thing so that's interesting! I learn a lot better from experience and trying things than reading, I'd definitely consider standing on a table and pouncing someone to get into the tyranid spirit though! I definitely love tabletop gaming for the tactile feeling of flicking through battlesheets and rulebooks, but I was a very casual gamer so it didn't reeeeally matter if we forgot something here and there. The main times when I felt apps were useful were making lists, but the hobby has changed so much since I was around.

Excellent start to the channel, I'm looking forward to seeing more!
