Thnx for the reaction. This song holds a special place in my heart. Leslie Knauer was one out of many posters I had on my wall in 1979 along with Bonnie Tyler, Kate Bush, Lene Lovich, Suzie Quatro, Olivia Newton John and that barebutt tennis player. My dad and I would sit quietly while this music video played on TV. Neither of us commented. It was just one of those unspoken moments of father and son where we both agreed that Leslie really did have a special quality... my dad muttered ''she's alright'' and my mates would later say ''you see the t*ts on her?''. It was the late 70's and it was Australia..

okay, listening to this for the second time, I am reminded of attending youth discos in the late 70's. I remember attending this weird disco that was hosted by Countdown host, Ian ''Molly'' Meldrum. I just remember this song blasting out of the speakers and we trying to dance to it. It must have been 1979. The video is also reminding me of Saturday mornings, watching music clips on TV and eating vegemite toast and eggs and Milo for breakfast. This video got a lot of play on Saturday morning television back in the day.

Australia loved it. The definition of a Power Ballad. You have the ballad part followed by the power part. Then there is you instrumental befor the end. This is the perfect example. In the late 1970s this was it!!! I dont understand how you dont understand the dynamic. At the end there

Canadian with German roots, if I remember correctly. And the two vocalists plus the guitarist _are_ siblings. This was a big hit when I was growing up in Germany, and I'm being taken right back to that time whenever I hear this song nowadays 😊

From different perspectives they are both avoiding the elephants in the room.

It's not bland!!!! it is hard to appreciate dynamic music when you are used to bland 'blah' stuff...that is fair enough...maybe the secret is to spend more time listening to stuff like this. This is so iconic to our time....we loved it even if you dont.

I don't think the people that watched Countdown were paying attention to her voice alone. I think it was the combination of the shrill vocals and the area just below the neck that got all the kids talking at the time. For a while the band had become something of a ''knudge knudge wink wink'' thing amongst pop historians and comedians. Any documentary or TV special on Countdown will always bring up Promises and Leslie Knauer's physical features. Her image would flash on the screen during Countdown's opening intro and segway segments - which worked as a constant reminder that Promises were a thing.
They had another song called ''Let's Get Back Together'' which flopped in Australia.
The female singer re-emerged with a group called Precious Metal in the early 90's, and scored a minor hit with ''Mr Big Stuff''.

The 70's just great, tension and drama. Yes, not polished, but who cares. Love it. 😊

Confusing how this song and performance doesn’t grab you. How anyone can find the song non entertaining is very confusing. The vocals are outstanding and going from mystical to such a dynamic performance by Leslie is just magical. Especially when viewing the unconscious engagement by the band members.

the best songs are the ones that sound a bit strange the first or second time you hear them

the chick vocalist could be sampled for any 90's/2000's happy hardcore dance track, but on a 70's disco-rock thing it just grates... I heard this by accident on some classic hits station and had to flick it off... Her chest made this song a hit

This came out during a strange time in music because there was a lot of New Wave that was steadfastly pushing itself into the 80's, and at the same time there was still a lot of 70's rock music that was still hanging in there in 1979. I remember thinking these guys sounded kinda old for their time. The guy looks and sings like any blonde guy in the 70's (Leif Garrett, Shaun Cassidy), the girl's voice sort of reminds me of Suzie Quatro, and the band still feels a bit mid 70's to me. However, the song still manages to feel late 70's.
It just seemed out of style next to Blondie or The Cars at the time. I don't think I even liked this song. It was just something that radio (3XY in Melbourne) and Countdown shoved down our throats as mere young music consumers.

I have always been aware that they were from Canada and I had thought, until now, that they were big in their home country. They had another terrible song called ''Let's Get Back Together'' which sounded even more dated than this song. All the kids talked about her chest, and from the comments I'm reading here, some of the kids still haven't gotten over them.

I thought the production was all wrong but with today's recording technology, it could be a whole lot better.
