A lot weightier than I'd expect from a game with "Smersh" in the title.

I kept thinking how this is basically Eldritch Horror with a few extra steps. Turns out EH came out after this. Easy to see where the inspiration came from. That and Arabian Nights, probably,

I love tales of the Arabian nights. Might just need to get this one!

I backed this because i loved the original, and almost every change they made is for the better. But those epic showdowns, and there are only 5 of them. Are a grind to play through and have very limited replay-ability. It's coming to the end of a game and being assaulted by a pile of words and so many challenges. I guess my idea of epic is different, because i found them really tiresome. This would not be an issue if that was an optional end game, but they baked it in. So you can have all these random encounters for most of the game, but the henchmen and lobo showdowns are locked and the same. Each henchman has only one encounter, and doing them a 2nd time is one of the worst chores i've had to do in a board game.

If this game had a different end condition, it would get the gold medal. But right now, its teetering on the sale pile. As i'm either going to have to patch it to make it work for me or get rid of it. And I loved original Smersh and its concept, but i didn't buy the original showdown expansion for my game for a reason. It sounded painful and not fun, and they have mandated it for every game.

I guess this is fine for folks who will play this 4-5 times and then never touch it. But for anyone wanting more than 5 plays out of a game, its a killer.

I have really enjoyed the couple of plays of Arabian Nights that I've had. This appears to maybe have more gameplay elements? Not sure I need both but I will definitely check this one out.

If I had a nickel for every review on this channel in the past week about a board game based on an organisation heavily featured in the James Bond series I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice

Any interest in reviewing Libertalia: Winds of the Galecrest (sp?)?
