I think about this a lot. Obviously the idea of coming clean and telling the truth are off the table. Also, people who cry snitch the loudest would sing like a canary to get 10 years off their time. I have always viewed snitching as telling on something that is inconsequential and has nothing to do with you. Like, if a guy in the next cell has 2 cigarettes and they are contraband, and you go and tell the guard that he has them. If someone stabs someone and ditches the shank on you and runs around the corner, I would not concider it snitching to tell the truth. I have heard people say that no, you just take the extra 15 years for the shank and keep your mouth shut. That's why I don't do crimes. Stuff like that would be the real hell of being in prison. Doing the time would in it's own way not be so bad. Being around a bunch of low life, grimey, social outcasts for years would be the most painful part.
