There is nothing dumb about saying "I don't know ". I have more respect for someone that says they don't know, than someone that doesn't know but pretends like they do. If you don't know, then you don't know. That's why we ask questions. So we can learn and know.

Most deaf people are hard to understand because they have never heard what they sound like but alot can read lips and are very good at it. Well done though man!

Many deaf people are reluctant to speak, particularly to non-deaf people. When you can’t hear, your words sometimes sound different. People used to say “deaf-mute” to describe someone who can’t hear OR speak, but I suspect many deaf people just didn’t speak by choice and were perceived as mute. There ARE mute people, can’t speak but can hear. Muteness can even be triggered by severe trauma. You handled it well, didn’t make a big deal or ask dumb questions.

I know for a fact that you can talk to deaf people and they totally understand you as long as you are not covering your mouth. They have an amazing ability to read lips and your non verbal. It is truly amazing. I have heard that blind people can hear far better than a person with sight. Your other senses amplify to extraordinary levels when you lose one.
