Is it True that Installing ONE FACTORY PART Can PREVENT HEMI TICK? In this video I give more info about the modification that I believe can help prevent Hemi Tick. Is this the right move for you?

Every Hemi owner lives in fear, or at least apprehension about the famous Hemi tick. What can we do to prevent it? That's the question everyone wants to know. As a Dodge tech for over 12 years now, I've seen and heard every theory under the sun about how to fix this. In my mind, due to the fact that most of the vehicles we see with failed lifters have extended idle times, this means that the sustained engine operation at the lowest RPM, and therefore the lowest oil pressure, seems to play a major part. My goal in this video and the next is to try to combat that problem by installing a Hellcat High Volume oil pump onto a stock 5.7 Hemi and see what the difference truly is. In this video specifically we cover the differences between the stock 5.7 pump on both the early and late model Gen 3 engine, and we discuss how to adapt them. I hope this video catches your attention as much as it did mine!

Just got my '08 Charger Police Interceptor back on the road after changing the head gaskets and rebuilt heads at 95k miles. I have no experience working on engines but I followed your videos and the only thing I needed to go back and do was readjust the rocker arms. I bought the srt headers to swap but couldn't find a set of midpipes in time. Thanks for the best hemi engine content on YT!

14% improvement with Hellcat pump may well be significant. My dealer shop foreman has stated to me that the supervisor or foreman trucks that spend a lot of time idling are about the only engines they see with cam/lifter failures. The workers trucks that are started and run with minimal idle time rarely have the failure. That makes sense to me since the cam lobe sans lifter are the last to get lubrication. With the advent of the low viscosity oils I postulate that the oil is bleeding off before it reaches the lifters and cam lobes. This coincides with my own experience with my own truck. Perhaps even going up to 5w-30 will help with the bleed off? I always ran 5-30 in my truck until the last oil change when I was convinced to go back to the 5-20. Followed in a couple of thousand miles by cam and lifter failure.

I sell a pkg at my Chrysler shop to permanently fix this and I’m a lead certified master tech for Chrysler and it comes with the pump and the demon lifters etc etc I’ve done over 3, 000 of these and it keeps rising it’s a MDS delete (self explanatory) I’ve got customers who drive 4-8 hrs or I’ve had cars and trucks shipped to me for this never a tick in ANY OF THEM!!! From 70k to the largest mileage of 387, 491 miles on a ram and every mileage in between plus he follows MY PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE. Guide and normal ware and tear, that truck has cost him as much as older Toyota in maintenance You’re the first video who’s on the right I’d hire you in heartbeat to help at my Chrysler shop while I focus on my other 2 shops a speed shop and heavy diesel shop

A reminder: for those who are looking for actual oil PSI before and after numbers, they will be in subsequent videos. Even if I'm wrong and this pump makes no discernible difference, I'll still post the numbers. 👍

Hey I'm the rare 2009 6.1L owner, that's me. I've been following your channel for awhile now and so glad you came out with this video. I spun a rod bearing last year and decided to get a stroker block to replace it. I'm going to upgrade a few other things as well and the hell cat oil pump just moved up on my parts list. Let me know if you want my 09 6.1L oil pump or other parts I may not be reusing so you can do other comparisons.

It's good to see you continue with your informative and accurate comparisons. I enjoy all the in-depth videos you do. Wish you the best Sky! :)

Thanks for this video. Installed this oil pump on my 2014 recently while replacing the cam and lifters, based on your theory in your earlier video. Nice to see the physical difference, and that it was worthwhile!

My first guess to this would be to see if the later 5.7 ring and 10 tooth gear will fit in the early 9 tooth housing. If it does, your increasing volume and pressure anyways without the need to modify the housing itself.

Man, you are a wealth of phenomenal brainstorming and accurate insightful presenting. I could listen to you and watch your work all day long !!!

Just a little FYI, P01 recall has taught many techs at the dealership about pulling the pump without pulling the pan on the cars. Also, there were some Grand Cherokees that came with a plastic oil pan which has the pick-up built into the pan - the pick-up would engage the pump as the pan was tightened to the block.
Also, from years of doing the P01 recall that replaced the timing chain, guide and tensioner. In order to get the pump rotated enough to get the pick-up bolt out, first take the tensioner for the timing chain out. If you have any worries about the timing chain falling off the crank gear and going out of time, you can simply run a zip-tie through one of the windows in the camshaft gear and around the tensioner side of the chain to hold it tight. Easily able to cut that off when the tensioner is back in place. One other tip, have a magnet that you can stick down into the pan to recover the pick-up mount bolt when you drop it down into the pan.

Excellent tutorial on the different types of oil pumps for gen 3 hemi engines! Thanks for the heads up on everything!

Fantastic video Sky, lots of great information, looking forward to part 2. Can you get the oil pump off a Ram with the pan still on...yes, but it's a pain (video evidence on my channel). You need a thin wrench, need to remove the chain tensioner, and there is a bit of prying involved. Remember that while the cranks are similar in length they did redesign the crank (changed the tapper on the snout) to accommodate the redesigned timing set, which is also a bit different. I will see if I can dig up some pictures and send them to you. Great video as always, and the new shop looks great, you just need to get the heat working...lol.

Love how you brainstorm through stuff on your videos. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge on the Hemi! 👍🍻

I had no idea but I’m glad there is someone that is able to break down the comparisons and it makes good sense. More flow equals better lubrication for better protection. Great job! Time to get a hellcat oil pump.

A little warning that ive seen from the rare few who used the hellcat pump, and even the melling HP. People have reported EXCESSIVELY high PSIs, 80-90 cold start, and it is the roughly the same at WOT, idle drops to what the stock pumps pressure would be at WOT(50-55).the engine will throw a trouble code for pressure, and you run the risk of blowing a seal, or worse, some say you may even lose power. You could probably tune your idle RPMs a bit, but coming from a habitual idler, my 160k miles has 6k engine hours, and ive never had a lubrication issue, and i have to warm my car up until the tranny hits at least 130 before itll be nice to me, usually 20-30 minutes. More pressure doesnt necessarily mean more oiling, since reportedly the SRT/cat have different methods of lubrication than the 5.7L.

It’s more than just the pump and mds disablement I buy cop cars at the auctions that are and and hemis and I fix them paint them and restore the interiors and use them for customers courtesy cars. Plus a couple 300’s that are cheap as hell and my cost on parts for the kit is only 288.80 for everything top to bottom a perk of being a tier 1 wholesaler for BTAND NEW PARTS. So so much people. Don’t know it blows my mind.!! Well played you’re on the right track

The only possible solution I see (...I'm not a mechanic, but I'm not afraid to do work either), would be to place the internals of the Hellcat pump into the pre '09 pump body. I have no idea if they would fit, but it's the only solution I see. Thanks for you videos, love watching!
One question, is there any risk to any part of the engine/seals etc. by increasing oil pressure across the board?

Perform a cam, lifter replacement I watched your videos thank you by the way explaining the hellcat pump so I looked into at local dealer it was 444dollars plus tax so way out of the budget so I opted for a meling hv pump 157 at my door in budget so pulled stock pump without dropping pan 4x4 saved hours just had to grind a cheapo wrench to gain clearance did the loose tchain got the clearance to unbolt pickup tube used bent needle nose pliers to star bolt took a bit got it tight so this from a retire mopar tech also never had been into a hemi so thanks again on the videos keep them coming.
