Solving an equation with parentheses

👉 Learn how to solve multi-step equations with parenthesis. An equation is a statement stating that two values are equal. A multi-step equation is an equation which can be solved by applying multiple steps of operations to get to the solution.

To solve a multi-step equation with parenthesis, we first use distribution property to remove the parenthesis, then we combine like terms by taking the variable terms to one side of the equality sign and the constant terms to the other side of the equation and evaluate them, and then we can isolate the variable by multiplying both sides by the reciprocal of the coefficient of the variable.

I see a lot of people adding a number to both sides. In this case, he added a 2 to the -2 and 0. What I find easier to do is switching sides to put similar numbers on on side and unkown numbers on the other. In this case, I would move the 2 to the right side with the 0 so the next line would be 4y = 0 + 2. Anytime a number is switched to the other side of an equal sign in an equation, the sign in front of it would be inverse so in this case it would go from a -2 to a +2. There was nothing wrong with what he did, this is just the way I prefer to do it. Nice vid!👍
