Surgeon Explains Intramedullary Nail Extraction | Dr Chris Raynor

Although surgery is a specialty that is generally associated with precision and finesse, occasionally it is necessary for orthopaedic surgeons to use brute force to get things done. Extracting and intermedullary nail is just one of those occasions.

These nails are inserted to treat fractures of diaphyseal, or long bones. they are usually hammered in to the bone, and are sized to match the diameter of the intermedullary canal of the bone. This means that the fit is quite tight and usually varies by 1 mm or less. Consequently, if they need to be extracted from the bone, then this usually requires some elbow grease, and the nails must be hammered out.

I needed some pins in my arm and given the surprising amount of force it took the doc to get just those out with forceps, it shouldn't surprise me this much is needed for a big metal rod, but ow- thank God for anesthesia.

My mum has had two knee surgeries and I was like "I'm gonna watch the surgery" but she didn't want to know about it. She woke up and her hip was sore and I'm like "you had your leg bent for four hours and they hammered something into both sides .... Yeah your hips gonna hurt"

Omg 😩😵‍💫 Please God let me not have any more surgery. I've had 3 foot reconstructive surgeries with hardware inserted, then replaced, then removed 🤞🏾🤞🏾✌🏾

Oh yeah, I had a titanium rod in my leg because I broke my tibia and fibia when I was 15 and had the thing out after I turned 18 (to avoid potentially breaking bone outside the rod's length when I get older, considering I grew two inches afterwards). My calf was black and blue for a week or two after the removal surgery . I requested to keep the rod bc my medical paid for it, dammn ittt!!! 😂

The surgeon there enjoys his job more than he should :D When I did my ACL, a few weeks after surgery my leg wouldn't straighten fully... the surgeon got me into a knee bar and he straightened it out the hard way. 10+ years later my knee is like new.

Well that explains why my ortho gave me 60 percs after my first surgery
