the movie was one of the best ever, but the trailer though is so misleading. it looks like a depressing and thrilling movie, when the reality the tone is completely different. i'm so glad I saw the movie first before the trailer

When the Old Pi told the second story,
I went back to watch the film again and pay more attention to every details this time,
I must said that Life of pi is one of the best Thriller films of all time.

There are four scenes from this film which I will remember forever.

The first is when Richard Parker is swimming, and Pi is about to kill him with the hammer as Richard Parker is unable to climb back onto the raft. Pi stares at Richard Parker's eyes, into his soul. Richard Parker was so defenceless, begging Pi to allow him back on, despite being such a powerful animal he is now in the hands of Pi. If I was Pi I would have killed the tiger, but when Richard Parker stares into the camera I feel I probably wouldn't have. That scene strikes me greatly, and evoked my presence into Pi's character the most. I knew at that point I wouldn't have killed him.

The second is the whale scene. The music is brilliant, and the site of the ghostly glowing jellyfish is amazing. It places ms into Pi's character, I could imagine staring into the glowing aquarian life and thinking, 'at least I was able to witness this, or if I survive I will cherish this moment forever.' However the exact same effect is made even larger with the whale. The music is fantastic, 'I saw a Whale.' it adds meaning and worth to the terrible experience Pi had.

The third is the scene of Pi and Richard Parker staring into the ocean (which I can't find on YouTube). 'What do you see, tell me' is the first sign of the large bond they now seem to share. The tiger stares at the ocean, once again you gaze into his soul, it seems so obvious that he is looking at the sea, pondering life, death, and the depth of the ocean just like a human would. The music which starts as the camera makes its voyage into the sea is fantastic and the most powerful moment of the scene, you know then you are in for a great cinematic experience about the ocean. Seeing Pi's mother (I'm not sure which woman it was but I hope it was his mother) and the now sunken ship is also very powerful, you see how Pi's past life is completely gone no matter the outcome of his journey. He now knows his family is dead.

The last is definitely the storm. There are many parts of this scene I love. When Pi 'sees God' the antithesis of the violent and aggressive waves to the glorious music and smiles of Pi work brilliantly. Another incredible experience that made the shipwreck worthwhile for Pi, his joy shows that. Everything seems beautiful and glorious, he shouts 'It's beautiful!' to a powerful note of the violin. The climax of the film - incredible. You feel the joy of Pi as a viewer - then reality sets in, the music changes to a melancholy tone - he sees Richard Parker struggling intensely to breathe and clearly in a very distressed state. You see his frightened eyes very close to the camera, struggling to breathe (this is so powerful) with Pi looking on with horror. He shouts 'Why are you scaring him!?' with anger and disgust to God, showing his dear appreciation for Richard Parker, after nearly killing him before seeing his eyes and soul in the first scene I talked about. For me this the most powerful scene of the film. 'I'm sorry Richard Parker'. He covers up the boat and lies in the storm with the tiger and him struggling in unison to breathe amidst the water.

Seeing Richard Parker struggling after Pi was so happy at seeing God, with the incredibly fitting music, along with the aggressive storm was so incredible in that scene.

And then you see Pi never saying goodbye to Richard Parker, never saying 'I love you, we survived, may God be with you' etc. Richard Parker never looking back, disappearing forever, an unfinished relationship. Pi saw Richard Parker's soul when looking into his eyes in that first scene I talked about, I, the viewer, saw into his soul. I know I wouldn't have killed him in that moment. He showed signs of a bond in a few scenes of the film, but he never showed any signs at the end that he cared about Pi. This sums up our relationship with animals. The gap in intelligence and communication means we can never be sure they have feelings for us despite how much they seem to sometimes.

And then you hear Richard Parker probably didn't even exist...when watching through the film again you plead yourself into believing he does, but when you see the end you plead he didn't. When I watch the storm scene I can't bring myself into thinking he couldn't have existed.

The ending, going back to a smiling teen Pi on the boat after a fairly long period of just adult Pi would always be powerful, and opposite Richard Parker, seeing him travel into the Mexican jungle for the first time was a nice touch. It truly makes you wonder if he was real.

8/10 film.

***Spoiler Alert***
Why does everyone keeps quarreling about which version of the story is the correct one? The point of the original book was that it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if either version is real. What matter is your belief. If you believe in one story, you give life to it, and it becomes real to *you*. The journalists wanted to believe in story omitting the animals, the writer wanted to believe in the story including the animals. Neither is correct, neither is erroneous. There is no way to prove the liability of either version. So you can believe in what you want to believe. Simple.

One of the best movie I've seen so far.

I'm actually quite surprised to see that so many people don't even realize that there's never been a real tiger in the movie in the first place (starting from the boat scene). The tiger is merely a depiction of his 'survival instinct' hence why the tiger left by the end of his journey (because he lands to safety in civilized world), the other animals were the representation of the other survivors (his mom, the cook, and that guy with broken leg). The story was told in animal representation because it'd be too much for others to know the "truth" behind what's really happened.

I can't tell you all the ways this movie imprinted on my heart. Saw it randomly on TV in 2015 and nearly changed the channel a bunch of times, but something kept making me want to see what happens next. It pulled me in. At the end I cried and It inspired me to want to call my father and talk to him because of what he says he wishes he could have told his dad before the ship went down. I talked myself out of it and thought "nah, I'll call him tomorrow or later this week and ask him to lunch." He died two days later of a sudden heart attack. I had no idea that a few days later I'd be facing the most challenging years of my entire life with the grief, pain, anger, regret, loneliness, fear, pride, and inner struggle to survive with many highs and lows. So low to the point of wanting to end it all. But I'm still here. I'm still breathing, still fighting to really live. I haven't seen the movie since 2015 because it hurts. But watching this trailer makes me think I need to watch it again and see it through new eyes.

Those who hate this movie were looking for an action flick and felt that they were cheated . Most of the action is happening with the main character and what is happening to him inside - his transformation . This is a philosophical movie and those who don't understand philosophy will not enjoy this movie or take anything away from it . It seems that everyone either thought that it was the worst, most boring movie that they had ever seen ( viewed from a shallow level of wanting an action flick ) and those who thought it was the greatest movie that they had ever seen - and it was life changing ( viewing it on a deeper level ) I suppose that we would see the same review on the classic movie, " The Old Man and the Sea" where Spencer Tracy is sitting in a rowboat throughout the movie, recalling his life .
