Mahsus Mahal derler kaldım zindanda
Kalırım kalırım dostlar yandadır
İk'elleri kızıl kandadır kanda
Ölürüm ölürüm kardeş aklım sendedir.
Artar eksilmeyiz zindanlarında
Kolay değil derdin ucu derinde
Kumhan Irmağı'nda Karaburun'da
Bulurum bulurum kardeş öfkem kındadır.
Dirliğim düzenim dermanım canım
Solum sol tarafım imanım dinim
Benim beyaz unum ak güvercinim
Bilirim bilirim kardeş gelen gündedir
______________
Mehmet Ruhi Su was a Turkish opera & folk singer of probable Armenian origin.
Ruhi Su was born 1912 in Van. He later expressed his situation: “He is one of the children desolated by the World War I.” At a very early age, he was taken from Van to Adana and given to a childless poor family. After living with the family, he was taken to Dârüleytâm, an orphanage that was built in Adana for the Armenian orphans.
Su was a member of the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP), against which mass persecution began in 1951. In November 1952, Su was arrested from rehearsals for the opera “The Consul”. He never returned to the opera stage.
Su was initially imprisoned in Sansaryan Han, a former Armenian-owned department store in the Sirkeci district of Istanbul that was expropriated after the genocide and used as a police prison in the 1940s and 1950s. Sansaryan Han was considered a torture facility; Su was also tortured, including having his fingernails ripped out. Locked up in a tiny cell called a tabut (“coffin”), he wrote the text of MAHSUS MAHAL (“Special Place”), which would later become one of his best known Songs. The song was dedicated to Sıdıka Umut, also a member of the TKP, who was in another “coffin” cell in the same prison at the same time and became his wife. They married while still in prison, and were taken from prison to the registry office.
