This is a genetic disease and what happens is that in the retina, there are rods and cones. The cones are what establishes us with colour, but certain pigments are not produced by certain parts of the cones when somebody has Colour blindness. Most often the colour blindness what we see is the red green so they mistake red and green. One of the ways we make it out is colour chart which are also called as ishihara charts and major problem here is these patients cannot take up jobs as cashier, very difficult for them to drive but it become as a learning experience and so they are able to appreciate the red and green of the traffic lights, the defence forces would not like to take any of these people only because of certain complications but today we do have certain amount of treatments for these conditions. One of the earliest treatments would be coloured contact lenses which have some pigments in them to distinguish the red and green because certain kind of filters would come into them. These days we have gene therapy and stem cells.
