CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: The power of the press, professional intrigue, blackmail, jealousy and ultimately murder combine to create a tale of unrelenting suspense in John Farrow's classic Film Noir: THE BIG CLOCK (1948). Starring Ray Milland, Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Sullivan the film has a superb cast of character actors, headed by the reptilian George Macready as the right hand man, the lovely and devious Rita Johnson as his duplicitous mistress and Laughtons wife, Elsa Lanchester as a ditzy artist who's surreal painting holds a clue to the mystery. Milland, fresh from his Oscar for THE LOST WEEKEND (1945), plays the head of a crime magazine, who has to uncover a possible murder witness, only to realize after some investigation, that he's looking for himself. Laughton, in another of his typically brilliant characterizations, plays Milland's employer, the head of a publishing empire, who knows the murderers true identity and must keep the police off the trail for as long as possible. Farrow's taut direction, the sophisticated and witty script and the superb acting of all concerned make THE BIG CLOCK big entertainment that's not to be missed!

Yes! I adore Rita Johnson. I have an autographed photo of her on my wall. She's so smart, sly and sophisticated in "The Big Clock". Her murder is mesmerizing. She and Laughton are so electric. That scene reminds me of the one between Agnes Moorehead and Bogie in "Dark Passage", simply spellbinding! I also loved her in another noir around that time called "They Won't Believe Me" with Robert Young, Susan Hayward and Jane Greer. I worship Sondergaard. So etherial and darkly, beautifully sinister.

❤️ Rita Johnson in this!!! Such a talented actress. She truly gave individual performances depending on the character she was playing.

Noel Neill, Isn't that a kick? I met her a while ago at a nostalgia convention here and got her to sign a very glamourous 40's photo. She laughed and rembered "The Big Clock". Her voice is unmistakable. Evidently, she was a very good jazz singer as well. She has long grey hair now, like Geradine Fitzgerald did in her later years and is so gracious.

Don't forget, Noel Neil, the 2nd B&W TV Lois Lane plays the elevator operator ... And Colonel Potter from MASH is a henchman !!

Great recommendation, Steve !

Thank you for reviewing this movie. It is fantastic. I saw it years ago after I found out that the Kevin Costner movie "No Way Out" was based on it.

Oh, I love "The Big Clock". Wonderful movie, plus if you're a little drunk the title can come out sounding naughty. Another Ray Milland movie I'd love to see you do is Fritz Lang's "Ministry Of Fear". Truly one of THE great thrillers to come out of the 40's. I'd so love to hear your take on it.

I love Charles Laughton! Thanks for this, Steve...onto the ever-burgeoning Netflix queue...

OF course you must remember that Maureen O'Sullivan was Mrs. John Farrow offscreen and that their greatest collaborative effort was their second child, actress Mia Farrow.  Another connection: Mia's big break was "Peyton Place" on TV in which she worked Macready!

I love your reviews and I can't BELIEVE I missed this one! Plus you even mentioned the book which is so so so good.

Remade as "No way Out" which, depending how you feel about Kevin Costner and Sean Young, is also worth a look, with the always great Gene Hackman in the Laughton role.

Ray Milland was over all a very underrated actor! If you like him in this, check him out in THE MAJOR and The Minor w Ginger Rogers and Reap the Wild Wind w/ Paulette Goddard. he could do anything!

At 3.42, the elevator "girl" is Noel Neill, who played Lois Lane in the Superman TV series.

Another great review. Even in a role that wasn't worthy of him or when he was being hammy, Charles Laughton was always compelling, one of the true greats.

Steve, just to let you know that you're being watched in the sticks. I'm close to your age, but have a gaggle of 20-something friends who love old flicks. That is a very strange and wonderful thing here in rural western New York. Every weekend we make dinner and watch movies. TOQATM has ruled our Netflix-ing for some time now. Can't wait to see The Big Clock!

14 years ago, amazing grace! Had to view this video as i was researching the film. My god, but you look the same today as you did then; well, maybe, a bit more handsome as you aged!
