Pieter-Jan Belder’s reputation in Bach is securely established, with albums of all the major keyboard works to his credit. ‘You can’t really go wrong with this set’ of The Well-Tempered Clavier (BC93892) according to Fanfare magazine, who
also praised Belder’s ongoing Brilliant Classics to record the complete Fitzwilliam Madrigal Book: ‘His playing is both skilful and nicely detailed. Each line is clear and unambiguous, so that the inner workings of the often complex works shines forth. In my opinion, this (and its companion volumes) will turn out to be the model against which all other recordings of the Fitzwilliam will be matched.’

Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach
Artists: Pieter-Jan Belder (harpsichord)
The term toccata stems from the early Baroque. In the hands of Girolamo Frescobaldi and Johann Jacob Froberger, it signified an extended piece that consisted of several contrapuntal sections that
were headed by a brilliantly figured introduction, full of virtuoso flourishes.
The primary aim of the toccata in the hands of Bach’s forebears such as Schmelzer and Biber was to dazzle and astonish listeners.

This was the tradition that the youthful Bach inherited and embellished in his unique way. All the toccatas on this album probably date from the composer’s period in service to the ducal court at Weimar, in the first decade of the 18th century.

Composed while still in his twenties, they are young man’s music, designed
both to impress and delight his listeners, both by the facility of his invention and
no less by the virtuosity of his performance. BWV910 is built to an especially grand design of two contrasting fugues, the second modelled on a refined French chaconne which recalls some of the composer’s earliest masterpieces such as the C minor Passacaglia for organ and the Cantata BWV12, Weinen,
Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, the ground bass of which is almost identical to the fugue subject.

Wunderschöne und detaillierte Interpretation dieser sieben logisch konstruierten Meisterwerke in verschiedenen Tempi mit klar artikuliertem Klang des technisch perfekten Cembalos und mit künstlerisch kontrollierter Dynamik. Wahrlich unvergleichlicher Cembalist!

And Brilliant scores again! Bringing together two masters: Belder and Bach! His interpretation of the Goldberg Variations and the French Suites are excellent, and without a doubt, these Keyboard Toccatas have the same quality. Now, we can only wait for the English Suites!

Esecuzione di impressionante qualità, stile clavicembalistico meraviglioso con fantastici abbellimenti e cadenze dell' eccellente esecutore. La chiusura della fuga in tempo di giga della toccata BWV 915 è semplicemente da standing ovation

I guess the bravery spirit of the performer should be added. I'm used to play these compositions without comparing them listened examples as often goes. This is probably the third time I give them a listen, I rather play them on the piano and they are amongst my favourite scores. Despite It is quite common looking for Gould as prime example for the best Bach's performances I'm now really surprised, pleased and caught in utter awe by this player. The best version ever heard I guess. Seriously remarkable. Congratulations!

I can't recall the exact story behind these compositions actually, but it is curiously interesting and it should be searched by devoted listeners since it gives back to fonded lovers of this componist a touch of Bach's sweet soul. Actually these tracks were composed and sent to a rare friend as a gift as a soft proof of friendship. I'm afraid I could tell a thing for another or making confusion of names but..go, look for it!

Jeez. These pieces really are early. Much as I love them, the sequences drive me nuts sometimes.

Does the end of the first toccata remind someone of Franck's theme for his fugue in his prelude, chorale et fugue?

while I think that the microphone has been placed to close to the sound board... Pieter's playing thought-out musical.. It's a great series of pieces of which possibly 912 and 914 stand out a bit...
