It may sound like a strange question with a straight forward answer, but there is actually some cool lore behind Salamander skin pigment

Salamanders are certainly one of my favorite space marines to run across if I were to endup in the nightmare-scape of warhammer40k

And the celestial lions got slaughtered by the inquisition…Guess some tropes don’t go away in the 41st millennium.

Fun lore fact all space Marine geenseeds have a variation of this it triggers the same color change if exposed to large amounts of radiation from bombs and such.

I will always love the Salamanders due to their nobility. The whole “hold the line for the people” parts of their books always hype me up, they are the Emperor’s true angels

the Salamanders basically have a permenant version of what squids have called chromatophores: organs near the surface of the skin that use elastic sacs of pigment that stretch rapidly into discs of color when the muscles around them contract.
suddenly, the Salamanders having a succsessor chapter called the Dark Krakens makes a lot more sense. both animals, salamanders and squids, can change their skin color.

Having red eyes, obsidian skin, and resist extreme temperatures, plus having a heart for the weak. That’s why I’m going with the Salamanders

And some very few lucky ones also inherent other characteristics of their Primarch - like being a Perpetual.

So it's possibly the best Chapter to join if you mange to roll the nat 20.

They are a wild bunch with Heart's of Gold, no matter how you look, they didn't give a damn, just be a Bro and you can walk with them all day, burning Traitors to ash.

Honestly one of my favourite things about the fact that even they combine all the traits to the point where it can appear "uncanny" (for lack of a better word) just makes me love them more because it doesn't matter at all what you look like. Anyone can be a salamander, the salamanders are humanity in it's totality. Unity is not everyone looking the same and doing the same thing, it's a group of people who make up for each others weaknesses and compliment others in order to make a stronger whole . That's why salamanders creed is that the imperium is its people, all of them. Into the fire, unto the anvil brothers <3

The geneseed organ that causes the skin to change color is the Melanochrome gland. Its part of a space marines lymphatic system. Its causes the marines skin properties to change based on environment. In can cause the skin to tan rapidly to help fight radiatio lf various types, the skin to sweat more in extreme heat to help the body stay cool, caise the skin to sweat out a fire resistant oil if its on am extremely high temp area or to add extra insulation if its realky cold. All space marines have this, the Salamanders just works on overdrive when responding to radiation.

Side note- tge fact that even the Terran Salamanders had this defect before their Primarch was discovered on Nocturne is often cited as possible evidence that the kidnapping and spreading of the Primarchs thru the warp may not have been as sudden or unplanned as official history says.

They may be the token chapter of inclusivity in 40K, but they compensate by being the nicest bros in the whole setting. Other then a pissed off Black Templar chaplain everybody loves the Salamanders.
